Me in @telegraph on the 250th anniversary of the publication of The Wealth of Nations >> Today we commemorate Adam Smith’s great work. We should remember him all year round
I have supported Boris Johnson for 15 years, for the London Mayoralty and for PM. Very sadly, I have written to him to say I can no longer do so, for the reasons set out below.
There are several very good potential candidates for Conservative leader. But choosing Boris now would be — and I say this advisedly — an absolutely catastrophic decision.
I had missed this. Just for the record, the direct opposite is true. While I was at BEIS the Government massively expanded offshore wind and renewables, commissioned Hinkley Point C and put in place the UK Industrial Strategy.
Tory infighting fully public now. Jacob Rees Mogg on Sky News swipes back at @Jesse_Norman after devastating letter, says JN was formerly energy minister & “No proper energy plan was developed, so Mr Norman must take some responsibility for that, he doesn’t do so in his letter”
Astonishing that Labour have now confirmed on the floor of the Commons that they will be voting AGAINST a further £34 billion to support the NHS and long term social care. A moment to remember.
I have always liked Lindsay Hoyle, and he has been a welcome change from his predecessor. But last night was a disaster for the Speaker, and we need to be clear about what happened and why. The Speaker:
-- set aside established precedent on a very controversial issue... 1/
The absence of a charge is not a tax break, and any money it may raise has not been hypothecated for education. This is a highly political tweet at odds with the proper neutrality of @hmtreasury and the civil service.
On 1 January, the 20% VAT break for private school fees will come to an end, enabling better investment in state education and helping to recruit 6,500 new teachers.

Both the leadership candidates are exceptional, but I am supporting Boris Johnson. I worked on his London Mayoral campaign in 2008, supported his re-election in 2012 and worked on his Conservative leadership bid in 2016. He is a person of huge talent, and an old friend. 1/
This is a time for plain speaking. Labour's victory has been described as a "cosmetic landslide". But this allows a potentially fatal complacency. Whatever the specifics of turnout, volatility etc., no one should be in any doubt. The national mood was Anyone But the Tories. 1/
I don’t know the Treasury’s mind regarding a windfall tax on the oil and gas sector. Few would embrace the idea with enthusiasm in normal times. But these are extraordinary times, and the arguments against it at present are very weak. 1/
Key fact: cycling is possibly the single biggest health intervention anyone can make in their life. As well as one of the cheapest. Especially for older people.
In @thetimes How cycling can add years to your life
I am supporting @RishiSunak as leader. Having worked closely with him at @hmtreasury, I saw at first hand how effective he was as Chancellor of the Exchequer. So he will be as Prime Minister.
