- A thread on why research skills gained at university level can be life-saving: 18 years ago my mum told me she’d seen a tick on her arm. I was studying for my PhD in York while she was five hours south of me. A week later she said a bulls-eye rash had emerged around the bite.
- Replying to @DrJaninaRamirezIf I had not learnt deep research skills during my degree - which was in the Humanities not the Sciences, although the skills are transferable - my mum may not have met her grandchildren. She may have died in extraordinary pain thinking she had lost her mind. I am so grateful.
- For those that know me on here, you’ll know I has two things on my bucket list: see a murmuration and the Northern Lights. Achieved one last year a few miles down the road, and tonight I’ve achieved the other from my back garden. I’m overwhelmed….
- Mean comments on my on-screen appearance hurt. I’m a documentary maker, not a studio celebrity. I don’t have a hair & make-up Department, but a fold up brush and a power compact. I don’t have wardrobe, but £200 to buy multiples of one outfit to wear for 10 days. Context matters.
- So I’m not a size 8. So I wear cheap clothes and slap on what make up I can when I can. So I’m exuberant to the point of being marmite. I’ve just written a book I’m very proud of that I think will change the way you view the period in history I love. So I’m okay. X
- Replying to @DrJaninaRamirezToday I saw a wonderful doctor. She knew all about Lymes and listened to my mum’s story with interest. She acted fast, prescribing antibiotics and will monitor my progress over the next week. She said she would notify others as she’d had three people with similar rashes in.
- Is anyone else just utterly utterly exhausted?????
- Replying to @DrJaninaRamirezIt was a slow road to recovery but it worked! My mum beat Lymes and a week later a small boy came into the doctor’s surgery with the same symptoms. Our family was able to treat him immediately, saving him from developing Lymes. He said my research informed his decision.

- Replying to @DrJaninaRamirezThen he threw my folder aside saying, ‘there is no Lymes in the UK. It’s impossible.’ I then did something I’ve never done before. So angry, I walked into his packed waiting room and shouted: ‘don’t trust this man. He is rude, ignorant & cruel. Go to another doctor.’
- Replying to @DrJaninaRamirezHe saw her immediately & we presented my folder. He read it cover to cover. Thought deeply, then followed exactly the advice - a month of antibiotics for every month since the bite. This was two years by now. I had found other advice for treating Lymes - kelp & high temps.
