Looks like we finally listened to the thousands of you asking for a Shawry for Trees show. I hope you are free on April 10-12 2026, we have a little thing going. Tickets: shorturl.at/LfO7i
Kenyatta's Cabinet had quite a number of alcoholics, but none came close to James Gichuru, the Minister for Finance, who was always drunk, that most of his work was done by Michuki (his PS) & Kibaki (then Minister for Commerce).
Story time 🧵
Jomo Kenyatta opening the KCB Moi Ave branch in 1970. Looking on is John Michuki the banks' Chair and Mwai Kibaki the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.
If I were to give you a simple answer, then it'd just be... Uganda.
But now that Too Early for Birds exists to tell Kenyan history in a dope way, then let me narrate the whole disappearance story of one Kung'u Karumba!
Thread🧵:
James Kerr Watson was a man of many firsts in colonial Kenya, both in the construction industry and in the agricultural industry. Little is known about him, so...
Let us do the honors:
This Landmark building (Kenya National Archives) in Nairobi, was constructed in 1931 by the National Grindlays Bank. The building was designed by one James Kerr Watson, the guy who owned a dairy farm known as Donholm in Eastlands.
Much is known about Jeevanjee with regards to his wealth, but less is known about how he acquired it, up to the point of founding the Standard newspaper as know it today.
So, let us do the honors:
Albhai Mulla Jeevanjee was the man who got the contract, in 1895, to supply labour for the construction of the railway from Punjab India.
He also founded the African Standard newspaper, now @StandardKenya in 1902.
Yes, Jeevanjee gardens in Nairobi is named after him.
The story picks up from 1970, when a Jewish fella known as Joseph Goldberger lands in the country.
He was impressed by the developments in Buruburu, so he set out to create a larger residential area with similar infrastracture.
The story of how Doonholm and the rest of Eastlands, became the residential area they are today is an interesting one, though sad.
Story for another day!
Now, let's talk about the Jomo Kenyatta succession story, since it was one of the most controversial political matters (for obvious reasons) back then.
Story time 🧵
Vice President Daniel Moi is sworn in as acting president one day after the death of President Jomo Kenyatta in 1978. Attorney General Charles Njonjo was keen to do it fast to avoid funny ideas from the GEMA crew that did not want Moi to become president when Jomo died.
Elections
When Kenya's political history is made into a movie (or a play 🤭), then the 1997 parliamentary elections of Gatundu South constituency should get a special feature.
Thread 🧵
Uhuru Kenyatta and his wife Margaret during his run to be MP for Gatundu South in 1997. He lost to Moses Muhia.
However,Moi made sure he did not stay out in the cold for too long, he nominated him as an MP in 2001 and presidential candidate in 2002.
Hello there @AzziadNasenya,
We think you are all kinds of brilliant.
We're also huge fans of your work. Especially how you wove your acting skills into a Kenyan song.
So, if you will be available, it'd be an honour to have you on #TEFBeats after the Rona. 🙏🏽

To answer this question, allow us to go back to 1963:
When the attainment of independence was nigh, there were two main contentious issues:
1. What kind of government Kenya was to have once political power was handed over by the British.
2. Who would occupy the White Highlands.
Jackson HARVESTER Angaine.
Here's the story of how Kenya's first Minister of Lands and Settlement grabbed 2300 acres of land in the Mt Kenya Forest.
Thread 🧵
Jackson Harvester Angaine was Kenya's Minister of Lands and Settlement after independence. Yes, he was the guy in charge of settling Kenyans to the former White highlands. That made him very powerful. He was the son of Paramount Chief Angaine M’Itiria.
How much do you know about the Kenyan Parliament before 1963?
Well, in school, we're taught of Eliud Mathu becoming the first African rep in 1944, and then eventually, Mboya, Oginga, Ngala & co. joining in 1957.
But how had it been operating before?
Let us do the honors:
A BIG THANK YOU!!!

(Yes, I said what I said!!)
To understand the origins of the City Market & the Jeevanjee Market, then we have to go back in time to the year 1895, when the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway began.
