The CAJ is now on Bluesky! While we will continue to share program and advocacy news here, we’re happy to join other journalism groups that are migrating to a more thoughtful, less toxic space to engage with our members and community. Follow us @cajournalists.bsky.social!

Journalists have a legal and ethical obligation to send questions and request comment from our politicians. Going after them for doing their basic duty is unacceptable and dangerous behaviour.

We’re grappling with how to handle the rise in anti-media vitriol directed at Canadian journalists. Tonight we chat with @MercedesGlobal, @EvanLSolomon, @glen_mcgregor, @Songstress28, @R_SPatel & others about what’s happening + how we move forward. 👉 x.com/i/spaces/1rmxP…

The CAJ has verified numerous reports that the #RCMP have threatened to arrest #cdnmedia journalists at #Wetsuweten Territory for taking photos. We remind @BCRCMPMedia that Canada is not a police state. Police do not have the right to control what is published.

🧵We are alarmed at the persistent and escalating patterns of harassment and intimidation directed towards Canadian journalists who dare to report on contentious topics in the public interest. One recent example occurred this past weekend with journalist @atRachelGilmore. (1/5)

To all the journalists working this weekend—amid hostile crowds and an ever-changing situation—to keep Canadians informed, thank you. And thank you to the newsroom leaders watching out for their safety.

This kind of conduct towards @atRachelGilmore is shocking. You may disagree with people's views or reporting. That is fair criticism. But at the end of the day, journalists are also human beings. Efforts to harass and intimidate are beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour.
A nice big hearty fuck you to the Diagolon guys who took a picture of me while I walked home from getting a tattoo and shared my exact location in their chat! Very cool and normal behaviour from very cool and normal people!

Google & Facebook have shut out Canadian news orgs from their platforms and decided to be dictators of what information Canadians can search, discover and consume. This violates the very foundations of an open internet. Corporate selfishness is kneecapping Canadian democracy.
BREAKING: Google announces it will pull news from Google Search and other platforms over the Online News Act. It’s also killing existing deals with publishers: blog.google/intl/en-ca/com…

The CAJ demands @BCRCMP immediately release Amber Bracken and Michael Toledano from police custody with their belongings. We also call on @marcomendicino to instruct the RCMP to drop any charges. Here's our full statement, with details on their arrest: caj.ca/blog/CAJ_calls…

Enough is enough. Online hate against journalists must be addressed. Today, the CAJ, @TorontoStar @TheHillTimes & @globalnews sent a list of demands to - @TorontoPolice, @OttawaPolice & @rcmpgrcpolice - 4 federal ministers & Ontario's attorney general Here's what we want🧵

BREAKING: The CAJ and other media orgs have won our court challenge against the RCMP in their restriction of press freedom at Fairy Creek in B.C. This is a win for journalists reporting there and for all journalists across the country. The media will not be suppressed.

Reminder to all Canadian politicians: Holding politicians and those in power to account isn't partisan. It's literally just journalists doing their (bleep)ing jobs.
    Replying to @SammyHudes
I asked Kenney if he acknowledges any responsibility for the state of the COVID-19 second wave in Alberta, and whether he apologizes to Albertans for how he’s handled it. “That sounds more like an NDP speech than a media question,” he tells me. #COVID19AB #ableg

According to news reports, employees from Alberta government's @CDNEnergyCentre have identified themselves as reporters. Government agency PR staff are neither independent nor unbiased. We ask that they end this misleading practice immediately. #ableg

The CAJ is troubled by the decision of police to remove reporter @JamesWestgateSn from Mark Carney's Liberal leadership campaign launch event late last week in #Edmonton.
