How ArtPrenticeship Works

ArtPrenticeship is a three-part, hands-on learning experience. Apprentices learn how public art is created from concept to installation, then develop their own studio work under professional guidance. The program concludes with a final exhibition at Washing Gallery.

Stage 1: Public Art in Action

Apprentices step into the real world of mural-making. Working alongside a lead artist, they learn how a public art project comes together from start to finish.

This includes:
- Concept development and community context
- Design refinement and scaling
- Surface preparation and materials
- Painting techniques and collaboration
- Installation and final reveal

By the end of this phase, apprentices have contributed to a large-scale public mural and understand the full process behind it.

Stage 2: Studio Practice and Skill Building

After the mural phase, the focus shifts inward. Apprentices develop their own individual studio art piece with guidance and mentorship.
‍
Throughout this phase, they participate in:
- Live demonstrationsTechnique workshops
- Process critiquesWork-in-progress reviews
- Creation of smaller part pieces leading to a final work

This stage is about voice, experimentation, and translating learned skills into personal expression.

Stage 3: Exhibition at Washington Gallery

The program culminates in a public exhibition at Washing Gallery. Apprentices present their finished studio work in a professional gallery setting.

They gain experience with:
- Preparing artwork for display
- Writing artist statementsInstalling work
- Engaging with the public
- It’s not just a class project. It’s a real exhibition.

Learn. Create. Grow. And then share it with the world.
