About Us

The Whiting Society is a group of bellringers, or change ringers. If you aren't a ringer, this won't mean much to you, and you perhaps ought to look at What is Change Ringing?  to find out what it's all about.

Articles

As well as the books, here are some articles about various aspects of bells, change ringing, bellfounding, and even bell ropes.  If you've arrived on this page from a search engine looking for information about Plain Bob Doubles, Beginners Treble Bob Minor, or the bellfounding industry in Glasgow, let alone Yorkshire tail ends or teaching bell handling, it's all in here.

We have available for free download a library of over three hundred, mostly old, mainly nineteenth century books about bells or change ringing. Most are out of copyright, all are interesting, especially as a window on to the social attitudes of the times, and most are still useful. Take a look.

Kilifi Ringers

The Society provided training to a group of ringers from Kilifi, Kenya, in the summer of 2015. Here are more articles about the Whiting Society's relationship with the Kilifi ringers, including an illustrated account of that visit.

Methods Named

Since 2013, the Society has been naming methods after members who have contributed to its work over many years. Take a look.

A bit of fun!  But some of it has a serious point.

The Society runs various courses from time to time on ringing related topics.

The Society had a stand at the Ringing Roadshow in September 2014, and which several new books, and the DVD / book combination, From Rounds to Ropesight, were launched. Take a look now if you weren't at the Roadshow, or even if you were!

This website is written in boring, plain, old fashioned HTML code. Our aim has been to ensure that it is polite, and well mannered. It will not talk to you, or blare loud music at you, nor even ring bells at you unless you ask it to. Nothing will change, or melt away, or move as you are looking at it.  The text will not dissolve as you are reading it. No colours will change: nothing will flash, twinkle or leap across the screen.

Whilst our aim is to develop the content of the site over time, we'll try to leave familiar stuff where you can find it, so it doesn't start to feel like one of those irritating supermarkets that move the stock around every day.

The emphasis is on providing a wide variety or relevant, good quality content, not on showing off flash programming techniques to produce irritating and irrelevant distractions. If you want to comment on anything you like, or anything you don't like, just contact us. Your comments are always welcome. We hope you enjoy the site and find it interesting and useful.
