From 1930 to 1940 America was mired in the Great Depression. Allentown was not completely spared from the national nightmare, but, by the foresight of its business leaders, it avoided some of the major disasters that sweep other places. In the 1970s graduate student Ernest B. Fricke wrote about it in a dissertation that was later summarized in the 1978 issue of the Proceedings of the Lehigh County Historical Society.
