Ana's financial journey
At CommonWealth, we believe financial well-being starts with understanding and compassion. Ana’s story is one example of how the right guidance can make a meaningful difference.
“No one had ever explained how my loan really worked.”
I was doing everything right, but my loan still felt overwhelming.
When I first got my auto loan from another bank, the interest rate was extremely high. I didn’t realize there were better options or fully understand how it all worked. I was keeping up with everything, but it felt like I was constantly trying to catch up.
When I met with Certified Financial Counselors, Marissa and Brenda, they took the time to walk me through it step by step. For the first time, I understood what was happening and what I could do differently.
Now, I don’t have to worry about picking up extra hours just to stay on track. I have more time to spend with my grandchildren, and I’m even starting to save again.

Planning With Purpose: How to Set Financial Goals That Fit Your Life
Setting financial goals is easy. Reaching them is where many people get stuck. Good intentions matter, but structure is what turns goals into progress. A simple, proven approach can help you clarify what you want, balance competing priorities, and stay on track even when life changes.
Start With the SMARTER Framework
The SMARTER framework gives your goals clarity and direction. Think of it as a checklist that turns vague ideas into actionable plans.
SMARTER stands for:
- Specific: Clearly define what you’re working toward and why it matters to you.
- Measurable: Attach numbers so you can track progress and know when you’re succeeding.
- Achievable: Make sure the goal fits your income and current expenses.
- Relevant: Choose goals that align with your values, such as financial independence or reducing stress.
- Time-Bound: Set a deadline. Without one, a goal is just a wish.
- Evaluate: Review progress regularly, such as monthly or quarterly.
- Revise: Adjust as life changes. Flexibility keeps goals realistic and achievable.
Once your goals are clearly defined, it’s time to look at the bigger picture.
