Just by taking a peek at Amavi’s branding and menu design, you know it’s a good spot.

Based in Cesme, Turkey, everything about Esme tells a story of sea creatures mixed with upscale elegance. The branding for this restaurant, designed by Studio Born , makes wonderful use of whimsical illustrations and considerate typography, all brought to life in menus with exceptional print quality.

From the cup coasters to the menu, all pieces are carefully designed, printed and assembled to create a luxurious introduction to a spectacular menu of freshly caught seafood and other local delicacies.

I’m all about pastel hues and here the pale pink contrasts beautifully with the navy blue used in the text and interiors, and the hot foil gold in every illustration.

The typography has been carefully curated by the menu designer to reflect the tone for a chic seafood experience – the main font, a light display serif, although refined, elegant and understated, speaks to the slope and very first tip of a wave.

In addition to the food menu, the cocktail menu’s design, with its custom dieline, is a tasteful journey around global beverages with wonderful little graphic details that turn this into a rich encounter, bursting with visual flavour.

As the concluding design element to this feast for the eyes, the bill is beautifully encased in a baby blue textured card folder, which also elegantly presents the restaurant’s business card.

Kinfolk magazine transformed my understanding of editorial design and proved that magazines could embrace minimalist principles traditionally reserved for book design.

Kinfolk magazine demonstrates that breathable layouts can succeed commercially, with the publication’s innovative approach to white space challenging conventional magazine design wisdom. This design philosophy proves that minimalist magazine design can attract readers and thrive in the marketplace.

Studying Kinfolk’s design approach changed my own magazine design methodology, with its considerate grid and layouts, and its blurring of the boundaries between book and magazine design in its writing styles, photography and editorial design.

As a graphic designer, I find the Belair Cantina menu a great example of how thoughtful design can elevate a dining experience. The moment I saw the menu, I was captivated by its vibrant and engaging aesthetic.

The use of bright and bold colours like red, yellow, and pink, evokes the lively spirit of the Mexican culture and draws the eye instantly. Each colour serves a specific purpose, creating distinct identities for the different menus.

The Happy Reader, a bookish magazine for avid readers , from Penguin, is a very beautifully designed and comfortably sized magazine about reading.

It’s very unassuming and doesn’t make an effort to be eye-catching. However, it’s one of the easier reads I’ve had. Another interesting aspect is that the layout slightly tweaks from issue to issue without losing it’s identity, as Penguin’s magazine designer, Matt Young puts it “ We want it to be a living thing, rather than just having a template that we keep dropping content into. The cover is always slightly different, the contents have moved to the front in this issue having always been on the back page, and the endpapers always change and often have a subtle link to the book of the season .”

It's wonderful how magazine design can lead us periodically from issue to issue while creating a wonderful graphic patrimony.

This might be a little controversial, but good design happens across all subjects and this magazine is a delight. The first thing that caught my eye was this beautiful pale pink that envelops all contents, print and photos.

This magazine is very well designed, printed black and white on pink paper stock. I love how it is so humorous, shameless and iconic without being too pretentious, how the apparently simple printing process itself sufficient and we don’t feel the need for 4 color images or even a variety of type treatments.

The magazine designer, Jop van Bennekom, has my admiration and has launched a couple of other graphically perfect magazines worth exploring, such as Fantastic Man and Gentlewoman .

Monocle magazine has been in my editorial design inspiration board for perhaps 10 years and it still relevant. Its notorious agility around the grid, type selection, little graphic devices that sprinkle the page, intricated column system and how they’ve brought editorial illustration back to life is fascinating.

More often than not, as a magazine designer, I spend a lot of time just trying to decipher each magazine spread and how everything comes together like a very organised puzzle. Not only they are a nice read, but they read nicely also.

A few years ago they’ve had a very humbling approach to improving the design of their layout, font size and grid. They increased font size and reduced the amount of columns and small lockups, making everything bigger, wider and more accessible, the reason being “we are not turning any younger”. For a long time I thought about this courageous move and how we, graphic designers, should listen carefully to our target audience.

Before starting the design work, I like to understand who’ll be reading the prospectus. It’s important to consider, among other things, include the audience's demographic, interests, and goals. Are you doing something for students looking for University programs, potential investors looking for premium new companies in the market, or clients interested in your services? These factors play a crucial role in shaping a successful design.

Consider the best format

The format is something important to think about early in the process. It determines how your audience will interact with the prospectus and can influence their overall experience. Whether it’s digital, print, or a combination of both, the format sets the foundation for the design.

Keep it simple

A clean, considered and refined layout is essential for an effective communication. Excessive text can sometimes overwhelm readers and it's important to for the content presented to be succinct. For me, white space is also a great asset to create a balanced look and try to guide the reader’s eye. Organizing text into clear sections with headings and subheadings makes it easy for the audience to find key information. Intruductions and text highlights can help to quickly establish an overarching feel for the offering.

Use visuals to help guide your reader

Visuals play a big role in design. Making use of high-quality images, graphics, infographics or iconography can bring your message to life and enhance communication. They help break up large blocks of text, making the content more digestible and draw attention to key points. A well-balanced combination of visuals and text ensures the design is both engaging and easy to understand.

Stick to your brand guidelines

Consistency in branding is crucial, as your audience should be able to recognize your brand in every piece of material you produce. Beneduce Vineyards: a story through playful packaging design

The history of wine bottle label design goes back hundreds of years, if not more. In recent years there has been a significant shift in the approach of some wine label designers to their concepts. I was instantly drawn to Beneduce wines because of their label. I really love the thoughtful design and the way it captures the spirit of Italian culture through simple illustrations.

Beneduce wine labels are more than just eye-catching, they tell a story. The illustrations, with their nod to classic Italian hand gestures, add a playful and welcoming touch. It’s as if the bottle is inviting you to experience a little piece of Italy. I find this approach to design incredibly refreshing compared to the more conventional and classic wine label designs you often see on the shelves.

For me, the tactile experience is just as important as the visual one. The embossed texture of the paper; the clean, elegant lines of the artwork; and the carefully chosen fonts; all contribute to a feeling of quality and attention to detail.

As a graphic designer, I first heard about Ellen Lupton when I was at design school learning typography and he r book Thinking with type was a reference.

Ellen is a writer, educator and a great graphic designer with a keen eye for typography and a vast portfolio of work. She is the author of numerous books on graphic design theory and practice, the curator of contemporary design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City and a professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art she now is one of my preferred designers to follow on instagram.

Known for her prowess in creating engaging storytelling around difficult and sometimes abstract subjects, such as kerning, leading and visual harmony, she uses a playful and entertaining yet clear and intelligent approach, enabling us to easily learn about the intricacies of typography, balance and hierarchy, and so much more, in the very short but captivating reels she directs.

Restaurant menu designs to celebr-ate! Bacàn, New York

At The End Creative Agency we’ve always loved restaurant menu design and bar menu design. They allow a level of creative play that is often not permitted elsewhere. We are incredibly lucky to live in a world where it is possible to discover a feast of design inspiration in every meal.

For the first of many courses of this series, we’d love to showcase some amazing work by Pentagram – in particular, the striking black and white, high contrast compositions found at Bacàn restaurant, New York.

Here, custom typography, designed in a playful way, converts to illustration, not only to create decorative elements that populate the stationary design, signage design and social media, but they also to bring to life the printed menu , resulting in an outstanding chaotic beauty somehow mimicking the translation of the Italian word bacàn: the loud sound of a great dinner or party. The only use of color is the craft paper background on the stationary. It is interesting to understand how these highly contrasted black and white forms overlay – although seemingly very simple, the composition is full of character and highly visible and recognisable.
