What is MTEL?

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) are designed to ensure that individuals seeking licensure as educators in Massachusetts have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the state’s public school system.

There are two main types of MTEL exam:

  • Communication and Literacy Skills Test
Required for all license types, this test has two subtests: reading and writing.
  • Subject Matter Tests
These tests cover a wide range of teaching fields across all grade levels, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, world languages, special education, early childhood education, and many others.

The specific exams you need to take will depend on your licensure pathway. Check the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website or consult with your educator preparation program to confirm your requirements.
