Protecting Yourself from Financial Scams
A scam is an attempt, through deceit or trickery, to intentionally mislead you, usually with the goal of financial gain. Traditional scams play upon the vulnerability of people by exploiting human virtues, such as compassion and trust.
It would be impossible to list all of the different types of scams that are prevalent today, but here are some general guidelines to avoid becoming the victim of a scam:
- Be very skeptical of unsolicited letters, calls, or emails informing you as a winner of any lottery.
- Don’t give out personal information over the Internet, telephone, or mail, especially critical information such as social security numbers or account numbers.
- Shred all personal and financial information before disposing of it.
- Review your credit scores at least once a year.
- Resist pressure to “act now.”
- Only communicate with or do business with people you know.
- Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as name, social security number, credit card number, account number, or other identifying information, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.
- A specific type of identity theft called “phishing” has become prevalent in recent years. In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, credit card, and account details by impersonating a trusted entity via electronic communication.
- Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging and often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. The perpetrators typically pose as trustworthy entities such as financial institutions, credit card companies, online merchants, utility companies, internet service providers, government agencies, and prospective employers.

Bank Cardholder Security
- Important phone numbers for lost and stolen cards.
- If you have requested a card and have not received it within 14 business days, contact us at 800-625-9066.
- Change your passwords often.
- Avoid changing your password to obvious personal information such as mother’s maiden name, birth date, and last 4 digits of your Social Security or phone number.
- Keep your card and PIN separate at all times and never share your PIN with anyone.
Possible Debit Card Restrictions – Contact Us Before TravelingIf you will be traveling abroad, consider contacting us before you leave. In some instances, we place restrictions on debit card usage (point of sale and/or ATM usage) for certain foreign countries. This typically is due to large numbers of fraudulent transactions being reported from that country. We’ll inform you of any known problems that could affect your debit card.
