I'm a Principal Data Engineer. One of the things I do is to look at what other principals are doing in their areas and weigh the pros and cons of each. I ask what is better and why I consider it better. Is it worth adopting? What help do I need to adopt it? What have I got that is worth sharing?
"Better" isn't just technically superior. It has to consider the training effort and supportability. I'd sooner have a B- solution that everyone can do than an A+ solution that only a few can manage.
At the principal level, there is a greater emphasis on soft skills. What you have to offer other principals has to be something they are willing to buy. Principal engineers tend to be strong-minded. They can be tough to convince, partly because they know that buying into a change means volunteering for the effort of getting their team to change too. As a principal, you learn to pick your battles
