WHMIS

In December 2022, Health Canada published amendments to the Hazardous Products Regulations to update Canada’s workplace hazard communication system and align it with the Seventh Edition of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), along with selected provisions from the Eighth Revised Edition. The changes will better protect workers by requiring more comprehensive and detailed health and safety information on product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), which will allow them to better protect themselves against hazardous products that they may use at work.

This course reflects the current amended WHMIS legislation.

WHMIS is an online safety course that will teach employees and supervisors/managers how to identify hazards through pictograms, labels, and Safety Data Sheets.

A new module has been added and is specifically for managers and supervisors, Module 6 – Employer Responsibilities.

Who should take this course?

Everyone! While you may have taken WHMIS education and training before, it has been updated with new information as the federal Hazardous Products Regulations were amended under the authority of the Hazardous Products Act in 2022.

WHMIS education and training is required for:

  • Workers who are, or may be, exposed to hazardous products by working with, storing, handling, or disposing of them.
  • Managers and supervisors who manage workers who may be exposed to, use, store, handle, or dispose of hazardous products.
  • Workers who are involved in emergency response.

After completing this course, you will be required to take a final exam. To successfully complete the course, you must pass the final exam with a minimum of 80 percent, at which time you will receive a Certificate of Completion. You are able to take the final exam three (3) times in order to pass, before having to take the course again.

If you do not successfully pass the exam on your third attempt, please email us at sarclearningcentral@sarcan.sk.ca to be enrolled again.

It is recommended that employees and supervisors of those employees take WHMIS every three (3) years to remain current; however, employers may require employees to take refresher WHMIS education and training more often, depending on their own needs, or policies and procedures.

This course is applicable in all Canadian provinces, as WHMIS was created in partnership with federal and provincial/territorial jurisdictions. For more information, please visit www.whmis.org.

Please Note:

This course is considered WHMIS education, which means it contains general aspects of WHMIS and is the first step in your WHMIS instruction. Upon completion of this course, your employer is then required to provide you workplace-specific training on the hazardous products that you will use in your workplace.

This course was created by SARC Learning Central and is based on the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, or CCOHS WHMIS online training, which is recommended and endorsed by WorkSafe Saskatchewan. You can visit the website here. The online WHMIS course meets a variety of learning styles, is narrated, and includes videos.

Modules include:
