{"id":70,"date":"2015-01-15T16:24:19","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T16:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.runyanprogramnotes.com\/program_note\/billy-kid\/"},"modified":"2025-06-16T17:11:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T17:11:05","slug":"billy-kid","status":"publish","type":"program_note","link":"https:\/\/www.runyanprogramnotes.com\/program_note\/billy-kid\/","title":{"rendered":"Billy the Kid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;If there ever was an American \u201ccomposer laureate,\u201d then Aaron Copland is surely he.&nbsp;&nbsp; A native of Brooklyn, the son of Jewish immigrants of Lithuanian descent, he established what many call the \u201cAmerican sound\u201d in art music.&nbsp; He had gone to Paris, like so many during the 1920s, to study advanced composition, and his musical style when he returned was accordingly advanced, some would say \u201cacademic.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; It certainly was often dissonant, and in no way exhibited the popular tunefulness that later made him the darling of mainstream America.&nbsp; But then, like so many other artists during the depression, he turned to a simpler, more accessible style, rooted in the populism of the time.&nbsp; Thus we have such evergreen compositions as <em>Appalachian Spring, Rodeo, Fanfare for the Common Man, <\/em>and<em> Billy the Kid.<\/em>&nbsp; Later, after the war, with the New Deal, the dust bowl, and the popularity of the communist party in America gone, he returned to the austere, more advanced musical style that previously had characterized his work.&nbsp;&nbsp; Nevertheless, most audiences today think of his \u201cdepression era\u201d musical style when his name is mentioned.&nbsp; They certainly prefer it.<\/p>\n<p> First performed in 1938 in Chicago by the Ballet Caravan Company, his ballet suite, <em>Billy the Kid, <\/em>contains lots of cowboy songs and other American folksongs, and in its eight sections roughly tracks some putative events in the desperado\u2019s life.&nbsp; It\u2019s fairly easy to follow the action from the titles of the movements and the nature of the music.&nbsp;&nbsp; The ballet opens and closes with the familiar \u201cAmerican sound\u201d of the open prairie that depicts the loneliness of the landscape and the trekking of the pioneers.&nbsp;&nbsp; The cowboy song, \u201cGreat Granddad,\u201d is heard in the quiet beginning of the street scene of the second dance, set in a small frontier town.&nbsp; The hustle and bustle of the street gradually grows into a vigorous dance featuring \u201cGit Along Little Dogies.\u201d&nbsp; A syncopated Mexican dance, followed by a graver treatment of \u201cLittle Dogies,\u201d ends the scene.<\/p>\n<p> Allusions to \u201cBury Me Not on the Lone Prairie\u201d weave through the quietude of the card game scene in the prairie night.&nbsp; The game doesn\u2019t last long, as gunshots in the percussion herald the violence in the ensuing gun battle scene. But when the shots subside, the tension is relieved by the jaunty celebration of Billy\u2019s capture, aided by Copland\u2019s clever intimation of two different keys going at the same time.&nbsp; The little drama soon quietly segues into a brief reflection on Billy\u2019s death.&nbsp; The \u201cOpen Prairie\u201d\u2014as at the beginning&#8211;then returns. The saga ends in a heroic, if not defiant, affirmative mood.&nbsp; We are left to muse over the enigmatic ending:&nbsp; is Copland celebrating the moral victory and resilience of the pioneers of the American West, or musing on the dark plight of the common man that so concerned social activists around the world during the 1930s?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Wm.
