{"id":47323,"date":"2015-07-01T10:34:22","date_gmt":"2015-07-01T09:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/?p=47323"},"modified":"2015-07-01T16:58:22","modified_gmt":"2015-07-01T15:58:22","slug":"jack-wins-scholarship-to-explore-fish-behaviour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/jack-wins-scholarship-to-explore-fish-behaviour\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack wins scholarship to explore fish behaviour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Jack Wootton, a third year undergraduate on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/higher-education\/courses\/animal-management\/bsc-hons-wildlife-conservation-and-ecology\/\">BSc Wildlife Conservation and Ecology<\/a> Degree.<\/p>\n<p>Jack \u00a0has been awarded a two month \u00a31600 scholarship from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufaw.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Universities Federation For Animal Welfare (UFAW)<\/a>\u00a0 to explore the behavioural responses of fish to reflective stimuli in their tanks. This will take place over the summer using fantailed guppies and will be based at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chester.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Chester<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jack has always been passionate about fish welfare. He completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/further-education\/courses\/animal-management\/level-3-diplomas-animal-management\/\">Diploma in Animal Management<\/a> at Reaseheath\u00a0 in 2010 and then spent two years working in the field in Borneo and in the industry near his home in Stockport.<\/p>\n<p>He followed this by completing his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/higher-education\/courses\/animal-management\/foundation-degree-animal-management-behaviour-and-welfare\/\">Foundation Degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare<\/a> at Reaseheath, followed by his current one year top-up which will hopefully lead to him achieving his BSc in Wildlife Conservation and Ecology. In addition to his studies Jack gained highly relevant experience working part-time as a zoo keeper at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/zoo\/\">Animal Centre<\/a>, helping to look after our fish department.<\/p>\n<p>Jack, who is particularly keen to improve the living conditions of fish in aquaria, applied for his scholarship independently while working for his degree.<\/p>\n<p>He said:\u00a0 \u201cI was really surprised but delighted when my project proposal was chosen. I am really looking forward to working with UFAW. Reaseheath has played\u00a0 an integral part in building my passion for aquatic life and furthering my career .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen Kay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaseheath.ac.uk\/higher-education\/he-student-support\/\">Higher Education Support Team (HEST)<\/a> Leader, said: \u201cJack is definitely one to watch for the future. As well as working to the highest level for his degrees, he always found time to help, educate and inspire less experienced students.
