Since 2009, AUDIO2 has been producing live audio descriptions for German television and a wide range of events. Their work spans every kind of broadcast production — from sports events to television entertainment shows and commemorative ceremonies.

In 2019, the company began evaluating audio encoding solutions to enable remote audio description workflows. After extensive testing, AUDIO2 selected the Prodys Quantum W and Quantum ST encoders for their combination of audio quality, reliability, and flexibility.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 gave the project an unexpected boost, accelerating the transition to remote production. The first remote broadcasts were successfully delivered in April 2020, marking the start of a new era in AUDIO2’s operations.

Since then, Prodys Quantum encoders have been used in over 1,000 productions, covering all types of content and deployment configurations — and remarkably, without a single broadcast failure.

Michael Kastelic, Senior Engineer at AUDIO2, explains:

“The Prodys encoders work reliably, even though we repeatedly face challenges with various SIM cards from different network operators. Our colleagues now keep the devices at home and comment on live broadcasts from their living rooms, hotels, or wherever necessary. This allows us to remain flexible in our resource planning and saves hundreds of production trips.”

Thanks to the Prodys Quantum series, AUDIO2 has built a robust and versatile remote commentary workflow, delivering consistent quality and reliability to broadcasters and audiences alike.

Finnish public broadcaster YLE relied on Prodys technology for its coverage of the recent World Athletics Championships at Japan’s National Stadium. To support live commentary, YLE deployed the Quantum2 W commentary unit, which handled audio and video feeds for three commentators while simultaneously receiving a programme return video signal.

On the receiving side, the setup was completed with an Ikusnet3 HR unit by Prodys, ensuring seamless integration of audio and video streams between Tokyo and Finland.

For maximum reliability, the YLE technical team connected the Quantum2 W using both ethernet ports: one linked to a dedicated 20 Mbps line with guaranteed bandwidth, and the other to a shared LAN. In addition, a local SIM card was inserted to provide an extra backup layer. The video streams were configured at a constant bitrate (CBR) of 4 Mbps, delivering sufficient picture quality for commentary without complaints from production teams. To further reinforce stability, a backup Quantum2 W unit was also running at YLE’s offices.

This careful configuration demonstrated the flexibility of the Quantum2 W, combining multiple network interfaces—dedicated line, shared LAN, and LTE SIM—to ensure stable and resilient transmission. Thanks to this redundancy, YLE was able to maintain reliable connections and deliver high-quality audio and video throughout the event.

The successful deployment of the Quantum2 W in this demanding live production environment underscores the unit’s suitability for large-scale international events, offering broadcasters a dependable tool for commentary and contribution workflows.

On the occasion of the 2024 Wimbledon tournament, the Prodys Quantum2 W audio/video commentary unit was tested as part of Sky Italia’s production, confirming itself as a reliable and versatile tool. The experience allowed the equipment to be evaluated under real conditions, during live broadcasts and connections with the on-site production team, receiving positive feedback on the effectiveness of its audio and video management.

Thanks to the positive results achieved during this first trial, in 2025 Prodys saw its commentary equipment integrated more organically into the production of Wimbledon 2025 for Sky Sport Tennis, confirming the continuity of the collaboration. This more structured integration made it possible to consolidate the use of the commentary booth throughout the entire event, ensuring greater stability and constant technical support for both the commentators and the on-site producer.

Josè Valladares, COO of Prodys, said:

“It is a great source of pride for us to see the Quantum2 W successfully deployed at a world-class event like Wimbledon. Our collaboration with Sky Italia has provided a clear demonstration of how Prodys solutions can deliver stability, quality, and ease of use, even in highly complex and high-profile scenarios. The trust placed in our products by our customers is the strongest motivation for us to continue innovating and developing ever more powerful tools for broadcasters and professionals across the industry.”

Tiziano Taddei, LCD Product Lead at Sky Italia, also stated:

“After more than twenty years of collaboration with Prodys, during the latest edition of Wimbledon we decided to use the Quantum2 W for managing the audio and video of the commentary booth. Thanks to its reliability and versatility, it guaranteed a stable connection with the on-site producer and a video return for our commentators. We also made use of SRT encoding and decoding for video transport, with an LTE backup connection, all of which was remotely managed via ProdysControlPlus.”

The Prodys Quantum2 W proved to be a compact and easy-to-use solution, confirming its effectiveness from the very first days of the tournament through to the historic final won by Jannik Sinner, broadcast on Sky Sport and TV8 and followed by over 5.5 million viewers. The unit was successfully used to manage the audio and video streams of the live broadcast, ensuring a stable and reliable experience for both the commentators and the audience.

The final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2024-25 was played on 24 May 2025 at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. In a thrilling match, Arsenal defeated Barcelona, preventing Barcelona from winning their third consecutive cup.

The broadcasting of this event for Spain was carried out by RTVE, with the head of international control at TVE, Alberto González, in charge of the set-up. He used an unprecedented set-up based on portable Quantum equipment from Prodys. First of all, he equipped a commentator’s position with two Quantum2 W units with video, which served the journalist narrating the match and the guest commentator.

The first Quantum2 W was used to mix the audio from both commentators and send it to the studio via an IP connection. The Q2W video encoder was used to send a backup video of the match, in case the international video connection provided by the host broadcaster failed.

The second Quantum2W equipment in the commentary area used only the video encoder and decoder, on the one hand, to send the image from the commentary camera to the studio and, on the other hand, to receive a return of the broadcast to serve as a reference. This image was displayed on a second monitor.

On the pitch, a third Quantum2 W unit was used to receive an audio feed back to the on-field presenter and a video feed of the programme broadcast for the presenter’s reference.

Finally, a Quantum Lite reporter unit was also used to provide ‘pitch reporter’ functionality, sending commentary and information from the field to the commentator position.

On the day of the match everything worked perfectly. The person in charge of the set-up, Alberto González, showed his satisfaction, commenting that ‘the Prodys Quantum2 W portable equipment is highly reliable for this type of broadcasting where nothing can go wrong’ and added: ‘In addition, with this Prodys equipment we are saving money because in these events outside Spain it is not necessary to hire a complete commentator position or a mobile unit on site from an external supplier’.

In the world of broadcasting, video and audio quality are paramount. The secret behind the seamless delivery of high-quality content lies in the technology of codecs. But what exactly are codecs, and why are they essential for broadcasters and radio stations alike?

What is a Codec?

A codec is a device or program that compresses data to enable faster transmission and decompresses received data. The term stems from the words “compressor” and “decompressor.” By reducing the file size of video and audio data, codecs facilitate efficient storage and transmission, ultimately allowing broadcasters to deliver high-quality content without excessive bandwidth consumption.

Popular Video Codecs

Among the myriad of video codecs, the most popular ones that have gained universal acceptance are H.264 and H.265. These codecs are known for their robust compression capabilities, allowing broadcasters to retain high-quality visuals while minimizing file size. Here at Prodys, we specialize in H.264 and H.265 codecs, ensuring our clients achieve excellent results in high-definition broadcasts.

Understanding the Role of Streaming Protocols

While codecs handle the compression aspect of video transmission, it’s the streaming protocols that facilitate effective delivery. At Prodys, we have developed our proprietary streaming protocol called Brave, designed to enhance the performance of our broadcast encoders in demanding environments. In addition, our systems are compatible with widely used protocols such as SRT (Secure Reliable Transport), MPEG-TS (MPEG Transport Stream), and RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol). It’s crucial to remember that while codecs compress the data, streaming protocols manage the transmission, ensuring secure and reliable content delivery.

In the world of broadcast contribution, quality and reliability are paramount, especially for remote commentary during live sports and news reports. To ensure seamless and high-fidelity audio transmission, broadcasters increasingly rely on advanced IP audio encoders. Among the leaders in the development of these audio encoders, Prodys stands out with its innovative solutions, providing unparalleled quality and dependability.

What are IP Audio Encoders?

Audio encoders are devices or software that utilize various audio codecs—compression algorithms designed to compress and encode audio signals for transmission over IP networks, such as the internet.

What is a Codec?

The codec is used to compress media data and is used for both streaming and storage. These codecs play a crucial role in the remote radio broadcast equipment landscape by ensuring that audio can be efficiently sent from one location to another without compromising quality, thereby using lower bandwidth compared to transmitting audio in its original raw format.

Note that a codec is different to the streaming protocol such as SRT or the Prodys BRAVE streaming protocol and plays a crucial role when streaming data. The codec and streaming protocol are two fundamental processes utilized by an audio encoder.

Common Audio Codecs Used by Prodys

Prodys’ encoders support a range of audio codecs, each with its unique benefits:

MPEG-1/2 Layer II: Known for its robustness and relatively low complexity, making it suitable for both high-quality and low-bitrate applications.

AAC (Advanced Audio Codec): Offers superior sound quality, particularly at lower bit rates, making it ideal for internet streaming and broadcast applications.

apt-X: Ensures near CD-quality audio over lower bandwidths, commonly used in professional audio and Bluetooth applications.

G711/G722: Widely used in telephony for its low complexity and low latency, essential for live commentary.

OPUS: A flexible codec designed for interactive speech and music transmission over the internet, offering excellent quality across various bitrates.

PCM (Pulse Code Modulation): Provides uncompressed, high-quality audio, though it requires more bandwidth.

Why and How the Codecs are Used

In live broadcasting, timely and clear audio is crucial. For live sports commentary, the dynamism and immediacy of the broadcast demand exceptionally rapid audio delivery to the audience. Audio encoders leverage these codecs to ensure low-latency transmission, meaning there is minimal delay from the commentator’s microphone back to the broadcast center, and ultimately to the listeners’ ears. This is essential not only for maintaining the flow of the commentary but also for synchronization with visual content.

For news reporters, who might be working in different parts of the world, IP audio encoders facilitate real-time audio feeds back to the newsroom. During breaking news, the ability to report live from the field without audio dropouts is critical. This process involves capturing audio, compressing it through the codec, and transmitting it over an IP network to the central broadcasting station, where it is decoded and aired.

Benefits of Prodys’ Encoder Solutions in Remote Commentary

1. Superior Audio Quality: Prodys’ encoders use high-fidelity audio compression algorithms designed to preserve sound quality while minimizing data loss. Products such as the Quantum Lite utilize advanced audio compression technology to ensure that every nuance of the commentator’s voice is retained.

2. Low Latency: Prodys encoders are optimized for low-latency transmission. This is particularly beneficial in live sports and news environments, where even a second’s delay can disrupt the broadcast’s natural flow and viewer experience.

3. Robust Connectivity: Reliability is a hallmark of Prodys’ solutions. Their field-based audio encoders offer multiple connection options, including wired and wireless networks, ensuring that the broadcast can continue regardless of the surrounding conditions. They excel in providing stable connections even in challenging network environments.

5. Ease of Use: With user-friendly interfaces, Prodys encoders simplify the process for broadcasters. Features include one-touch connection setup and intuitive controls, which are particularly beneficial for journalists and commentators working in the field.

6. Scalability: Whether for individual reporters or large broadcasting networks, Prodys provides scalable solutions. Networks can elegantly expand their remote broadcast capabilities by integrating additional audio encoders without a hitch.

Practical Applications

Live Sports Commentary: The immediacy of sports requires commentators to provide energetic and timely updates. Using Prodys’ IP audio encoders, commentators can deliver real-time coverage with pristine audio quality, engaging viewers without technical interruptions.

News Reporting: Reporters frequently find themselves in unpredictable locales, covering fast-developing stories. Remote radio broadcast equipment, including Prodys encoders, empowers them to send high-quality audio back to their stations seamlessly. This enables networks to deliver accurate and immediate reports, enhancing their credibility and trustworthiness.

Special Events: From political debates to red-carpet events, Prodys encoders ensure clear and reliable audio transmission, allowing audiences to enjoy uninterrupted and high-quality audio coverage of significant occasions.

Prodys’s range of IP audio encoders represent a significant advancement in broadcasting technology. By providing reliable, high-quality, and low-latency audio transmission, these encoders enhance the broadcast experience for both journalists and audiences alike. Whether it’s the excitement of live sports commentary or the urgency of breaking news, Prodys’ encoder solutions are revolutionizing the way broadcasters navigate the dynamic world of remote commentary.
