PDF Annotator 10 features a redesigned user interface optimized for Windows 11. Background rendering significantly improves scrolling and zooming performance, even in large and complex PDF documents. Long-running operations no longer block the user interface and can be cancelled at any time.

Enhanced PDF generation

Annotations are now stored as vector objects whenever possible. This improves visual quality in other PDF viewers and often allows annotated text to remain searchable and copyable.

New "Print to PDF Annotator" driver

A completely new virtual printer driver is included, fully compatible with and certified for Windows 11.

GRAHL software design announces the immediate availability of PDF Annotator 10, a major step forward with numerous improvements and new features:

New Look: We have completely redesigned the look of PDF Annotator and adapted it to Windows 11.

The main menu and toolbar now share a single line. In the settings, you’ll find an option for the familiar two-line display.

Icons are now vector-based and are therefore displayed with full sharpness at any size and resolution.

Colors have been harmonized in Dark Mode.

More spacing results in a clear, uncluttered image. The "Compact View" (under "View, Toolbars") reduces spacing.

All dialog windows have been modernized and redesigned. Some dialog windows can now be resized, for example, to enlarge previews.

Improved Support for Multiple Monitors (DPI)

PDF Annotator windows can now be easily moved between monitors running with different DPI settings. It no longer matters which DPI setting the program was started with.

Accelerated Display & Smooth Operation

The display of complex PDF documents has been moved to the background, so that the application always remains smooth.

When scrolling and zooming, the application is no longer blocked while waiting for complex documents to be displayed.

Even with longer tasks that display a progress window, the application always remains responsive, and the task can be easily canceled.

The display of preview images in the "Annotations" tab has been extensively improved and accelerated.

Improved PDF Creation

Whenever possible, annotations created in PDF Annotator are now stored in the PDF using vector format, which leads to a significantly improved, sharper display of PDF documents in PDF viewers and programs from other vendors.

This means that text in text annotations can now, in most cases, be searched, highlighted, and copied in other PDF programs.

New "Print to PDF Annotator" Driver Version

The new version of the virtual printer driver is now fully Windows 11-compatible and Windows 11-certified.

Please note that this step was urgently required. However, the range of functions and the display of printer properties of the new printer differ from the old printer, and some printer functions are no longer available.

Headers and Footers, Watermarks

Under "Edit, Document," you can now define headers and footers that should appear on all pages (or ranges of pages).

In the same way, you can define watermarks, text that appears centered on every page.

Define as many headers/footers or watermarks as you like and select the font properties and desired positioning for each text.

Watermarks can also be displayed as rotated text and expanded to fit the maximum page width.

Improvements to the Integrated Image Editor

The image editor has been completely redesigned. Performance when using the camera has been improved.

A new black-out function for redacting content in images, similar to the existing pixelation function, is now available.

New selection functions have been added.

New "Edit Link" Command

Links created with the Text tool can now be edited directly by right-clicking and selecting "Edit Link...".

New "Text Styles" Toolbar in Full-Screen Mode

When editing text annotations in full screen, a new toolbar now appears directly above the text being edited, containing all text properties.

This feature can be disabled via the context menu during text editing.

This feature is also available in regular mode if the toolbars above the document have been disabled.

New "Digital Copy" Feature

As before, the option to create a digital copy is offered when opening documents with restrictions defined by the author.

A digital copy of any document can now also be created at any time using the new command in the "File" menu.

New Function for Melting Selected Annotations

Under "Edit, Selection," you can now selectively melt one or more selected annotations.

Melted annotations can no longer be changed.

New Functions for Duplicating Annotations

In addition to duplicating to the next page and to all pages, "Edit, Selection, Duplicate" now also offers the following commands:

Duplicate on current page (Ctrl+D)
Duplicate on... (for entering page numbers or page ranges)

Synchronized Tool Properties

In the settings under "Tools, Properties," you can specify that certain properties, e.g., colors and line widths, should be applied to all tools - not just the active tool - when changed.

Maintain Page Section when Navigating Pages

In the settings under "Display, Scrolling" there is now an option to maintain the page position when moving from page to page.

Disable this option if you prefer to move to the top left corner of the page when changing pages.

Configurable File History (Recently Used Files)

In the settings under "Save, Recent Files," you can now adjust the number of recently used files.

By selecting a number of zero, you can deactivate the file history.

To protect your personal data, the lists of these file names can also be deleted at any time.

Delayed Restoration of Recent Documents

When using the "Restore document tabs from last session" option, the documents are now only loaded when the tab is clicked.

Activate the new "Restore even if files are no longer available" option to restore a tab even for documents that are no longer available. This allows you to, for example, first reconnect a network drive so that the files are available.

When printing a list of all annotations via the "Annotations" tab, the totals of the annotations on each page, as well as a grand total, are now also printed.
In all input fields for page ranges, you can now enter "odd" or "even" to apply the respective function only to the corresponding page range.
When zooming with the mouse wheel, the document now remains centered under the current mouse pointer position.
For text annotations, there are now keyboard shortcuts to decrease (Ctrl+8) or increase (Ctrl+9) the font size.
In the "Settings" dialog, the settings for each page can now be reset to their default values using a button in the top right. Instead of the Quick Help on the right side of the dialog, a help page for the dialog can now be accessed via "Help" (bottom left, or F1).
For new installations, the Tool Switch is initially disabled. The switch can be displayed in the settings under "Display, Tool Switch".

GRAHL software design announces the immediate availability of PDF Annotator 9, a major step forward with numerous improvements and new features:

Color Modes - “Dark Mode”

Choose between the usual bright color mode or the new dark color mode.

Color mode affects the appearance of the application user interface. Your PDF documents will always display identically - as printed on white paper.

Accent Color

Choose between the usual “red” accent color or the new “blue” accent color.
For users with red green deficiency we recommend using the accent color “blue”.

The accent color will be used in several places throughout the user interface, for example for tool symbols or for marking the currently selected page.

”Area Dimensioning” Tool

You can now also dimension areas.

Area dimensions are annotations that become part of the PDF document (cf. “Measure”).

Areas get marked up semitransparently.
Text can be edited manually.
Select a predefined or custom scale.
Turn display of dimension unit on and off.

“Connect Lines” Feature

... to snap corner points to existing annotations.

This feature is now available for lines, arrows, polygons, distance and area measures.

Also, the corner points of polygons and points on ellipses/circles get identified as snap targets.

Create dimensional chains using the distance dimension tool and “Connect Lines”.

Individual Text Formatting

You can now format parts of text annotations individually.

For example, you can format individual words bold or in italics, underline or strike out phrases.

Use different font types, -colors and -sizes within the same text annotation.

Individual Paragraph Formatting

You can now set separate alignment options for paragraphs within the same text annotation:

left aligned
centered
right aligned

Superscript and Subscript Text

You can now apply these new text styles to letters, numbers or text phrases:

“Polygon” Tool

Use the new Polygon tool to draw

closed polygons
polylines

with the support of the popular

“Connect Lines” and
“Snap to 15° Angles” features.

Open and Closed Polygons

Polygons: Close a polygon by clicking the starting point or by choosing “Close Polygon and Accept”.
Polylines: Finish an open polygon by choosing “Accept”.

Moving Corner Points

Easily move corner points to modify a selected

area dimension or
polygon.

”Formula” Tool

Create and edit complex scientific formulas using our brand-new formula editor.

Make use of a wide selection of

predefined expressions and
common symbols.

”LaTex” Formula Editor

As an experienced LaTeX user, you may edit the underlying LaTex commands directly to edit a formula.

Share and exchange formulas using copy and paste from/to other LaTeX supporting editors.

“Black Screen” for Presentations

In Full Screen Mode, you can now temporarily turn the display completely black to ensure your audience’s full attention.

Use the Full Screen Mode action button, or press Alt+B.

Press any key, or click/tap with mouse, pen or finger to end the blackout.

Improved Color Selection

All color pickers (e.g. for selecting the pen color) have been revised and now contain

a palette of common colors,
an additional palette for saving and reusing your own colors (“My Colors”).

Enter/Copy RGB or HTML Color Values

Expand the color picker window for an enhanced color picker with the ability to enter colors as RGB or HTML values (e.g. “#FF0000” for red).

Here you can also copy or paste color values.

Extract Colors with the Pipette

Use the “Pipette” tool in the expanded color picker window to extract colors

from the currently visible part of the document, or
from any point on the current monitor.

“Autostart Search” setting

You can now disable the automatic start of the text search while entering a search phrase.

Duplicate Selection to Next Page

Like the existing “Duplicate to All Pages” feature, you can now as well duplicate a selection only to the next page.

PDF Annotator 64-bit

As a true 64-bit application, PDF Annotator can now access significantly more memory on 64-bit systems.

Enables loading larger files, and editing more documents at the same time, than with the 32-bit version.
Setup will automatically install the correct version for your operating system.

Select and Edit Annotations

While moving, resizing or rotating annotations, all changes display immediately.

Enables exact annotation placement.
Larger appearance of selection rectangles and size grips on high resolution displays.

Dimension Tool

Dimensions are annotations that become part of the PDF document (cf. the Measure tool).

Dimensions consist of extension lines, dimension line, and editable dimension text.
Select a predefined or custom scale.
Turn display of dimension unit on and off.

Rotate Annotations

Rotate annotations using the new rotation grip directly within the document.

Rotate snaps to 15° steps while CTRL key is pressed.

Measure Tool

Measure tool to extract measures from PDF documents:

Improved appearance of measured distances and areas.
Measure results stand out better with large and clear display directly within the document (instead of small hint windows).

Create Links

Links are text annotations that, when clicked, jump to:

a web URL,
a specific position (page) in the current document, or
an external document.
Define link text styles (e.g. blue, underline) directly within the Configure Link window.

Intelligent Auto-Smooth

Extended functionality for the Auto-Smooth feature available for pen and marker tools:

Intelligent geometric object recognition (rectangles, squares, circles).
Start and end points will automatically snap to, or be moved towards existing lines.
Automatically closes circular lines by moving the end points to the start points.

Intelligent Auto Connect

New Connect Lines feature now available for line and arrow tools:

Start and end points will automatically snap to, or be moved towards existing lines.

Laser Pointer Tool for Presentations

The laser pointer is a large red circle that can easily be located even from a distance.

Activate via “Tool, Laser Pointer” or by pressing the letter “o” key.
Back to previously used tool with ESC key.
Draw temporarily with the laser pointer: After lifting the pen (or releasing the mouse button), the drawn mark-up disappears.

Extract Text

When using the Extract Text feature, after selecting some text, the context menu won’t open automatically anymore.

Now, just click “Edit, Copy” or press CTRL+C to copy the selected text to the clipboard.
All features previously available on the context menu are now accessible directly from the toolbar above the document.

Move Bookmarks with Drag’n’Drop

In the sidebar:

Move bookmarks with the mouse using drag’n’drop.
The destination position will be outlined exactly.

“Print” Command on Explorer Menus

If PDF Annotator has been set up as the default application for PDF files, the Windows Explorer context menu will now include a “Print” command.

Print PDF files without having to open them in PDF Annotator first.
Print just one, or multiple documents at once.

Use your Pen as a Clicker

In full screen presentations, press the button at the end of the pen to advance to the next page.

Single click: Advance to next page.
Press and hold: Back to previous page.
Requirements: 3rd Gen Microsoft Surface Pen, Windows 10.

Arrow Appearance

Arrowheads now draw with sharp edges (vs. round edges in previous versions).
Reference points of all arrowheads have been corrected to point exactly to the tip/end.
Arrowheads now draw in a size well-balanced to the line width.

Accelerated App Start

The application startup time has been further reduced.

On new installations, the Quick Start option now gets enabled automatically.
You can also enable the “Start with Windows” option under “Extras, Settings, Preferences, Quick Start”.

Improved Cloud Drive Compatibility

Saving documents on folders synchronized to cloud drives like Dropbox, Google Drive™ or Microsoft OneDrive™ could fail when those 3rd party tools accessed and blocked files for synchronization. We are now actively working around these issues.

Secure File Saving

When your computer runs out of battery, crashes, or has a hard drive failure, in the moment when you are saving a document, those files can become corrupted. We have introduced a new file saving strategy to reduce this risk of data loss in unexpected situations.

"Send Email" and Microsoft Outlook™

Latest Microsoft Outlook™ versions caused problems with the "File, Send Email" feature in PDF Annotator. We have found workarounds, so that "Send Email" will work flawlessly with those Outlook™ versions.

Improved Memory Management

Memory management changes in the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update caused problems while trying to open very large PDF documents in PDF Annotator. Our setup now works with Windows 10 in a way to make more memory available to PDF Annotator for opening large documents.

Improved 3rd Party Tool Compatibility

Post-editing PDF Annotator documents with other PDF tools can make it hard for us to identify the annotations added by PDF Annotator. With additional checks we try to detect those situations, and enable a more seamless PDF workflow with different PDF tools.

Improved Printing Experience

We have reduced the amount of memory required for PDF printing, to provide a faster and more reliable printing experience.

PRESS RELEASE

PDF Annotator for Windows can not only write on PDF documents, but also create or combine PDF files. The new Version 7 comes with additional useful features; for example, photos can now be turned into PDFs. Engineers appreciate the new measuring function for technical documents.

In numerous businesses, engineering firms and universities, PDF Annotator has for years established itself as the leading software for editing PDF files. Using PDF Annotator makes it possible to write directly within PDF files using a Windows PC or a stylus-equipped tablet such as Microsoft’s Surface Pro. PDF Annotator’s strong points have for years included handwritten comments, text boxes, stamps and highlighting.

Likewise, PDF Annotator enables creation of new PDF files. Now, with Version 7, customized templates can be used to fashion new PDF documents. A template might be a letterhead or a memo with a corporate logo. Once you start the first page of a document from a template, additional pages will automatically employ the same template.

PDF Annotator 7: Comments on images, and measurements in technical drawings

PDF Annotator 7 can open not only PDF documents, but also all of the common image file formats, such as JPG or PNG files. Images are automatically converted to PDFs. Images can also be centered on a PDF page, so that comments can be added all around the picture. A photo can quickly be added to a PDF file, along with an explanatory note.

Something that users from technical areas have long waited for: PDF Annotator 7 now offers a tool for measuring distances. This allows measurements from technical drawings to be taken with only a few clicks. Even traverses and areas can be easily measured. For drawings with no explicit scale, such as scanned or photographed plans, a scale can be easily established once one known dimension is entered.

Another highlight of the new version is the ability to merge multiple individual PDFs into one large PDF document. All the user needs to do is select a list of PDF files, put them in order, and PDF Annotator will combine them to build a single large document.

PDF Annotator now finally has the ability to protect documents with passwords, and to incorporate detailed permissions for editing, printing or copying the contents of the PDFs that it creates.

Other new features in PDF Annotator concern its built-in image editing. Specific areas in added images can now be pixelized. One swipe takes care of making sensitive data, such as faces or vehicle license plates, unrecognizable.

Finally, thanks to a new quick-start option, PDF Annotator 7 now starts in just a fraction of a second. Texts can be centered, and the text marker has been given some additional fine points. Comments can be more easily rotated. Stamps can be duplicated on all pages of a document and more easily edited. These and other detailed enhancements make working with PDF Annotator 7 more convenient than ever before.

The toolbox in the PDF Annotator sidebar shows you a wide range of predefined tools. When you click on a pen, marker or text tool choice, the toolbar above your document changes to the chosen tool properties. You can then change the properties for that tool by selecting them in the toolbar. This will not affect the predefined tool in the toolbox, though. The next time you select the predefined tool in the toolbox, the same predefined settings will be applied. However, you can permanently edit those predefined tool settings in the toolbox.

Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford: More and more universities all over the world are seeing PDF Annotator appear in their lecture halls, allowing for a more contemporary, interactive experience. Version 6.1 comes with a completely revamped Full Screen Mode.

PDF Annotator is a Windows program that lets users mark up and revise existing PDF documents on their screen. When revising texts, they can even insert handwritten comments in a document.

Oliver Grahl of GRAHL software design: "Our software has been available for the past 12 years. It can be found in over 1,100 universities all over the world, including such renowned institutions as Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford and Princeton in the USA and Cambridge and Oxford in the UK. It can be used to comment on students' written work, as well as to facilitate note-taking during lectures."

PDF Annotator 6.1: Practical uses in universities and schools

One thing professors and teaching assistants especially appreciate is Version 6.1's fully redesigned Full Screen Mode. Instead of an ordinary computer, they find that they can use a tablet computer like Microsoft's Surface Pro connected to a projector in the room. Thus, they need not direct their attention away from the students in order to write something on a board. They can simply use previously prepared slides that can be completed and annotated in the course of a lecture.

Oliver Grahl: "This is the next phase of teaching. At the end of the lecture, the instructor saves the updated PDF file and makes it available for students to download. Students no longer need to write things down, and can instead concentrate on what the instructor is saying."

What works in the university also makes sense in the school classroom. Over a thousand schools have already licensed PDF Annotator. Pupils can hand in their homework as a PDF file, and teachers can use the software to illustrate the material without the need for a blackboard or a whiteboard. What's even better: with a wireless network in place, teachers can bring the tablet to a pupil's desk to have them fill in a blank or complete a sketch.

PDF Annotator 6.1: Completely revamped Full Screen Mode

Given the number of educational institutions using PDF Annotator, it's easy to see how suggestions for improvements can come about. This has led to a complete redesign of the Full Screen Mode in Version 6.

This option eliminates all distracting menu bars, so that the actual document can take up the maximum available space.

Oliver Grahl: "We have made it possible for all the important tools to be right at hand. Properties such as stroke thickness or color can quickly be changed. Power users can configure up to 40 separate buttons. The system adapts to either portrait or landscape orientation, depending on how the tablet is held. We also support the high-resolution monitors that are becoming more and more common. A new toolbar with thumbnails and bookmarks, also available in Full Screen Mode, makes navigating through a PDF effortless."

With PDF Annotator on a PC or tablet, it's any easy matter to edit or annotate an existing PDF document. The new Version 6 now comes with a completely new full-screen mode. It also facilitates capturing of photos so that they can be directly incorporated into a PDF file. The new image editor enables editing of photos as well.

PDF documents are an unavoidable part of everyday computer activity. They allow documents, brochures and other types of media to be easily distributed through the use of a common platform-independent format.

Things only become difficult when it comes to making changes to a file without some very expensive software. PDF Annotator has been filling this gap for years, permitting edits and annotations directly on the document. Today, over 300,000 people are using this product.

PDF Annotator makes it possible to add handwritten comments or substantial amounts of text using the keyboard. Users can create emphasis using the highlighter tool, and add circles or other symbols, or even additional pages.

As Oliver Grahl of GRAHL software design puts it: "Our program simplifies the task of editing and revising PDF documents. In both educational and corporate settings, it allows members of a team to contribute their thoughts and suggestions to a draft without requiring them to be sitting together at the same table."

Of course, all comments can be saved directly to the PDF. What's more, the person receiving the file can also temporarily disable all the changes in order to see what the document originally looked like.

PDF Annotator 6: A new full-screen mode for live presentations!

PDF Annotator's existing full-screen mode has been completely overhauled for Version 6, and has now been recast as the Presentation Mode. Many users have already availed themselves of it on tablets like the Surface Pro to remove all distracting menus from the view and make the entire screen available to display content.

Oliver Grahl: "Many of our customers use PDF Annotator in real time during lectures and presentations to add comments, drawings or arrows to the current slide. The new version was created with them in mind. The new and unique Presentation Mode is low-key and unobtrusive, and can be both configured and deployed with minimal effort."

Version 6 now also offers camera integration. At any time, users can use their webcam or tablet camera to take a picture and immediately add it to the PDF, in order to pinpoint aspects of the photo or to add descriptive comments.

A complementary feature is a new image editor that can crop or enhance pictures and optionally make any scanned stamps or signatures appear transparent.

PDF Annotator 3 Maintenance Release Available

We have published this important maintenance release last week, which includes a couple of bug fixes and improvements.

As always, we strongly recommend updating to the latest version.

To apply this update, either go to Help, Version Check within the software or manually download and install the latest version from our download page. There is no need to uninstall your existing version prior to installing the update.

This update is free for all Version 3 users. If you're still on an older PDF Annotator version, upgrade now.

This update also fixes a couple of issues with our "Print to PDF Annotator" printer.

In the past, we have seen some users encountering issues with our PDF printer after applying updates. It either did not appear in their printers list, or did not work correctly afterwards. We're confident that this release will have resolved these issues.

Therefor, after updating our PDF printer, this update will ask you to reboot your computer, and will continue after you log in again. We're sorry about this inconvenience, which will hopefully not be necessary with every future update.

In case you still experience a problem, please let us know and try reinstalling only the "Print to PDF Annotator" printer using our separate printer repair installer.

Automatically open on screen keyboard when editing text annotations using pen or touch.

Whenever documents are circulated among several persons, Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF) usually comes into play. PDF files can be viewed on various operating systems and in any kind of environment. They preserve the original layout and require only the free reader software, which is available for all systems.

Problem: PDF files are supposed to be unmodifiable. Their content can be read, copied and printed, but not edited. If a text needs to be proofread or a document needs to be annotated, usually the only solution is to print and edit the hard copy.

In an age of paperless offices and rapid exchange of data over large distances, PDF Annotator 3 soon becomes indispensable. This Windows tool opens existing PDF files and allows them to be edited directly. With PDF Annotator 3, each page can be displayed on the screen, and can be revised, edited, commented, or corrected. Users can highlight text passages, circle them, and add handwritten comments. Likewise, it becomes a simple matter to add drawings to pages, insert callouts or type notes in the margin.

PDF files are the uncontested choice when it comes to sharing data between different persons, computers, and operating systems. PDF Annotator 2 takes classroom presentations to a new level: teachers and professors can now capture the substance of a presentation as a PDF document and project them on the wall. Then PDF Annotator takes over, as the instructor adds remarks and drawings, making possible a new kind of lecture. At the end, the PDF document can be saved in its new form and loaded to a server where it can be downloaded.

This is the shape of instruction in the new millennium. PDF Annotator 2 makes PDF documents editable on the screen, instead of just on paper, as in the past. So, for example, important passages can be highlighted, and drawings, strikeouts, or arrows can be added to a page. You can even add comments--either on the keyboard, or by hand. PDF Annotator 's new Version 2 now also lets you add images with a rubber stamp tool. At the end, the result can be printed or saved as a new PDF document.

As Oliver Grahl of GRAHL software design puts it: "The numbers of instructors using the full version of our software is steadily increasing because it is so well-suited to classroom use. PDF Annotator 2 really shows off its capabilities when it comes to editing electronic presentations."

PDF Annotator 2: Live PDF presentations in full-screen mode

Many instructors typically collect various documents that they use to illustrate a lecture by projecting them on a screen. Microsoft PowerPoint, Soft Maker Presentations or OpenOffice.org's Impress are useful tools for putting together appealing presentations that combine text and images. Even newer online applications like Google Docs and Microsoft Office Live can save presentations as PDF's. Existing presentations saved on overhead foils can, of course, also be scanned and then saved as PDF files.

Now, PDF Annotator 2 can open one of these files during a lecture and display it in full-screen mode. This view eliminates the menus and margins and shows only the pages themselves with narrow toolbars along the edge of the screen. The toolbars can be expanded in seconds when necessary by holding the mouse over them. This represents a brand-new approach and an intriguing solution that saves all available space for the content, while removing unneeded trimmings. In addition, the optional "continuous view" allows the text to be scrolled into view line by line. This is a significant improvement over past practices, where the presenter would slide a piece of paper downwards to progressively expose new bullet points. Fortunately, this antique methodology can now be become a historical curiosity.

Presenters can now modify the material while it is being shown. Sketches can be drawn, passages underlined, numbers updated by hand, and arrows drawn to related material. Instructors can also prepare a text with portions left blank that can be filled in during the lecture. Another possible use would be to formulate a mathematical solution to a problem with the help of the audience.

Oliver Grahl: "This represents a new way of livening up instruction--in effect, the entire notes are being written during the lecture itself--and with the direct participation of the students. A lot of instructors who have tried this method say that they would never want to give it up."

The best way to work on PDF materials is using a Tablet PC, which makes it easy to write or draw on the display with a stylus. It can also be used on any laptop, but most universities already have a good supply of Tablet PC's. Moreover, PDF Annotator 2 also lends itself to distance learning with the help of desktop-sharing software available through outside vendors. A few universities are already using PDF Annotator for this purpose.

PDF Annotator 2: Saves all changes in a new PDF file!

At the end of the lecture or class, any changes made to the PDF document by PDF Annotator 2 can be saved as a new file. This means that the final product can immediately be saved and made accessible to the audience's computers or downloadable from a website. This also means that the class can concentrate on the material that is being presented instead of busying themselves by taking it all down.

Oliver Grahl: "In this way, it is an easy matter to put together a collection of lecture or classroom notes that can be used to review the material or that can be quickly downloaded by a student who has missed a lecture."

How's this for creativity: PDF Annotator can open PDF documents for markup with electronic ink - turning the revision of an existing document into child's play. Version 2.0 makes the process even more efficient, with new functionality including a Page Manager, a completely customizable Toolbox, Stamps, a Bookmark Manager, and a facility for straightening out handwritten lines.

PDF files are a great invention. Documents written and formatted on any personal computer can easily be exchanged between users - no matter how they were created, or what operating system the author or reader are using. PDF documents can be opened, viewed and printed. Unfortunately, they cannot be edited.

Or can they? This is where PDF Annotator 2 saves the day. The software lends itself to creating, commenting or revising PDF documents of any kind. In short, PDF Annotator makes it possible to work with a single copy of a text as one would if no computer were available: multiple users can highlight passages with a marker, circle individual words, add handwritten or keyed comments next to existing text, or draw a quick sketch to show how a graphic could be improved. At last, even readers of digital books can add remarks directly on the page. All these annotations can be easily be made on a Tablet PC or graphics tablet, or even with a mouse and keyboard on a regular desktop PC.

A key point is that all comments are saved directly in the original PDF file. Oliver Grahl of GRAHL software design puts it this way: "More and more enterprises and creative teams are using PDF Annotator to pass a file from one person to another and gather comments. At the end, all observations and corrections are incorporated into the original. The result is a final version on which everyone has had a chance to comment and contribute - whether it be a manual, a small newspaper, or a company profile."

PDF Annotator 2: Now with virtual stamps!

Version 2 of PDF Annotator is now available immediately. The software has been extensively optimized and enhanced. Some of the principal new features are:

Page Manager: the Page Manager, prominently displayed in the new sidebar, contains thumbnails of all pages in the PDF document. These thumbnails can be used to move, copy or rotate pages - even several pages at once. It is now easy to insert new documents into an existing PDF file, as all of PDF Annotator's tools can be applied to the new file's pages, as well. Page Manager maintains a history of previously visited pages, and can automatically find the next page in the document with annotations.

Toolbox: The new Toolbox makes it simple to select the most appropriate tool for the task at hand. This could be a pen, marker, text tool, or stamp. The contents of the Toolbox can be arranged to the user's liking, and the most commonly used tools made quickly accessible through a favorites collection on its own tab. The Toolbox's flexibility gives each individual a quick and easy way to increase productivity.

Stamps: The Stamps tab on the sidebar makes it easy to apply designated images to a PDF page, even many times in succession, just as with a rubber stamp. Almost any image file can be used as a stamp. Certain common symbols like check marks and arrows are delivered as part of the software. Just by using the green check mark and the red X, a checklist can be set up in record time. Bold arrows can alert a reader to changes that might otherwise not be immediately apparent. New stamps can be made out of any of a user's image files, or from user-specified text.

Bookmark Manager: The new Bookmark Manager lets users create, modify and delete bookmarks in a document. Bookmarks can then be accessed from their own sidebar tab. Another helpful innovation is PDF Annotator's ability to remember which page was open when a document was closed and to automatically return to it the next time that the document is opened.

Auto-Smooth: To give the finished document, with all of its changes and comments, a professional appearance, Auto-Smooth can be turned on wherever needed. It straightens any manually drawn line or marker stroke, and even makes drawings look more professional.

Version 2 also sports improvements to the full-screen mode and text search functions, and now permits a continuous view of the entire document. The menus and toolbars have likewise been optimized and given a new look and feel. When composing text, users can now choose from among different background colors and borders. A new super-fast rendering engine optimizes clarity and readability, even when small fonts are used.

At the annual presentation of the Epsilon Awards this year, GRAHL Software Design’s PDF Annotator was awarded second place. This now award-winning software can be used to mark up an existing PDF file with comments, corrections, and drawings. This makes editing any kind of PDF document child’s play.

The European Software Conference (ESWC) has been presenting the Epsilon Awards since 2006. These are presented to software developers who have created a standalone application for the Windows, MacOS, or Linux platforms and who have made it through a qualifying round to distinguish themselves from the competition in open voting. Last year’s winner was the British company Alcohol Soft’s program Alcohol 120%.

The winner of this year’s competition was xplorer2. Runner-up was Germany’s PDF Annotator, and third place was awarded to the well-known compression tool WinRAR. After the qualifying round (July - September) and the voting phase (September - October), these three applications trounced the remaining competition. Results of the voting were announced at the November 4 session of the European Software Conference in Cologne.

PDF Annotator makes it easy to write and draw directly on PDF documents. Right now, PDF Annotator is finding more and more uses in instructional settings-by both teachers and students. Seizing on this, the producer has now decided to make the software available as an economically-priced "School Pack."

Any document, spreadsheet or presentation can be saved in PDF format. And anyone can view any of these files with the free Acrobat Reader. So it doesn't matter what application was originally used to create the PDF. Meanwhile PDF (Portable Document Format) documents are spreading like wildlife and popping up everywhere.

A PDF revolution is taking place on the average home computer. Formerly, PDF documents could only be viewed and printed-unless one had expensive additional software, they could not be edited. Now, PDF Annotator makes it easy and cost-efficient to add notes to PDF documents. Comments can be added in longhand. Anyone can now circle entire paragraphs, draw arrows to point out areas of special interest, or underline text. In the past, PDF Annotator could be found mainly in businesses, where with either a Tablet PC or a Windows 2000/XP desktop, documents or charts could be edited and commented on the spot. Creative Instruction-Using PDF Annotator

PDF Annotator is finding more and more uses in schools and universities. PDF Annotator wins at Microsoft Tablet PC Contest

PDF Annotator for annotating PDF files on the Tablet PC, wins at the Microsoft "Does Your Application Think in Ink?" Tablet PC Contest together with eleven other programs.

After a pre-judging out of 260 participating applications, the finalists, including GRAHL software design with their PDF Annotator product, presented their applications to a well-known judge of computer journalists and analysts, hosted at Ziff Davis Media in San Francisco, CA.

The judge awarded two products with the first (ArtRage, Ambient Design) and second (GoBinder, Agilix) prize and then awarded prizes to ten more finalists of the contest totaling $165,000.

PDF Annotator enables the user to open any PDF file and add annotations, using the TabletPC pen, directly on the PDF file's pages. The annotated documents can be saved back directly to PDF. This way, everybody is able to read or print the annotated PDF documents. Annotated documents can also be attached to emails easily.

PDF Annotator will be released in December 2004.
