DIAA State Girls Wrestling Championships

The Delaware state girls wrestling season has officially come to a close for our Lady Ducks.  On Sunday, February 15, 2026 our Ducks stepped on the mat at Smyrna High-School for the Fifth Annual Delaware Girls State Wrestling Championships.  At the end of all of the wrestling, two of our very own stood on the podium.  Rory Whitehouse placed 3rd at the 152lb weight class and Savannah Timney placed 4th at the deepest weight in the state which included three previous state finalists.

Officially recognized as the fastest growing sport in both high school and collegiately our state bolstered an impressive 180 female athletes who competed throughout the season.  With the current trajectory of girls wrestling in the state of Delaware, the sport is on track to become the newest varsity sport added.  Additionally, schools like Delaware State University (Division 1) have helped the NCAA to make women’s wrestling the newest varsity sport in all three of their divisions.

Player Spotlight, by College Delaware Sports Blitz

The Odessa High School basketball team has been on a roll this year, boasting a 9-2 record and winning nine straight games. Junior guard Tori Richardson has been critical to the team’s success this season and has been making a name for herself in the state and out. Richardson is the leading scorer on the team through 11 games, averaging 26.5 points per game. As of January 16th, the junior guard is ranked #74 nationally in points per game and is the leader in the state of Delaware in scoring.

The Ducks guard has had no problem finding the bucket so far this season, recording double digits in all 11 games. She has scored 20 or more points in four games this season, including four 30-point performances. Richardson was finding the basket with ease in the December 12th game versus Glasgow, where she scored a season-high 40 points. The junior in the number three jersey made two shots from the three-point line and drained all ten shots from the free throw line in the game. After four 30-point-plus performances and the 40-point blast, Richardson was named Delaware Basketball Explosion’s player of the month.

Given her scoring prowess, it’s no surprise Richardson is the leader in the state of Delaware in field goals made with 53 as of January 16th. But scoring is not the only skill the Odessa guard has in her arsenal, as she leads the team in steals with 3.5 per game. Richardson also knows how to get her teammates involved in the game, as she leads the team in assists with 1.5 per game.

The Ducks look to continue their strong play in their next ten games, and with Richardson surging, there is no way to think that they can’t continue to build up more wins.

Our team achieve a collective grade point average of 3.80 across the academic year—an accomplishment that speaks volumes about the team’s dedication, discipline, and commitment to academic success.

This achievement is a testament to the student-athletes' hard work, as well as the support of their coaches, teachers, and families. All-State Girls Soccer Selection

Please join us in congratulating Caroline Perry and Samantha Mitchell for being named to the DIAA All-State Girls Soccer team!

(Left) Caroline Perry #5 - 18 goals  - 4 assists -

Caroline was one of the best attacking players in this conference and the state. She had 18 goals in 14 games. The majority of her goals have come from playing as an attacking midfielder. She’s been a part of 1/3 of our goals this season and we’re a team that has had 21 out of 22 varsity players score a goal and 19 different people have at least one assist.

(Right) Samantha Mitchell #6- 4 goals - 1 assist -

Sammi is a player that is critical for us on both sides of the field. When we struggled to find a true forward for our team she stepped in and scored 3 goals against Delcastle, who at the time had only given up one goal. She also scored a goal against Milford and had the goal against Middletown in our playoff game. After that she moved back to her natural position of center back where she is able to win a lot of 1v1 battles against our toughest opponents.

We're exciting to see both players return to DUcks squad next season!

Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day

A Special Event for Delaware’s Female Athletes

The Office of Women’s Advancement & Advocacy hosted a special celebration for National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the University of Delaware. This event honored the incredible progress of girls and women in sports and highlighted the benefits that athletic participation brings to their lives.

Female athletes from every high school across the state were invited to join in this inspiring day. The event featured a panel discussion with collegiate athletes, coaches, and leaders in women’s sports, who shared their expertise on the topic, “Taking the Next Step as a Student Athlete.” After the panel, attendees enjoy light refreshments and receive two complimentary tickets to the UD Women’s Basketball game, which follows the celebration.

High schools were asked to nominate one outstanding female athlete to represent their school and OHS selected senior Gabriella Pudimott (Softball and Track & Field) to represent the Ducks. We celebrate Gabby as one of Delaware’s most talented female athletes and her contribution to the future of women in sports!

National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Celebrating OHS Athletes: Sophia Ridgeway and Hannah O'Grady Recognized at Legislative Hall for National Girls & Women in Sports Day

On January 29, 2025, two outstanding OHS student-athletes, Sophia Ridgeway and Hannah O'Grady, were honored at Delaware’s Legislative Hall in Dover for their dedication to sports and their exemplary leadership. The event celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day, a nationwide initiative highlighting the achievements of female athletes and promoting gender equality in sports.

Sophia  and Hannah were recognized for their athletic accomplishments and contributions to the sports community as field hockey and lacrosse standouts at Odessa. After the Delaware House passed a resolution in honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, the young athletes were invited to the assembly to receive individual recognition in front of lawmakers.

The day began with a meet-and-greet where Sophia and Hannah had the chance to engage with legislators and share their inspiring stories. It’s an incredible honor to be recognized alongside so many incredible women in sports. This event is such a wonderful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much more we can achieve.Being able to stand in front of these leaders and show what women in sports can accomplish is an amazing experience. We hope their story encourages other girls to pursue their passions, no matter what they are.

State Representative Melanie Ross Levin praised the achievements of female athletes like Ridgeway and O'Grady, emphasizing how sports provide young women with essential life skills, confidence, and a sense of community. Sophia and Hannah represent the future of women’s sports in Delaware. We are so proud to have athletes like them leading the way and showing the next generation what is possible and it serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting girls and women in sports. As we celebrate their achievements, we also look forward to the continued growth and success of women athletes, both locally and nationally.

Sophia and Hannah’s recognition is a testament to the hard work, determination, and talent that continues to shape the future of women’s sports in Delaware. Congratulations to both of them for being shining examples of leadership, dedication, and athletic excellence!

Alumni Spotlight

Girls Basketball attended the PSU York vs. PSU Brandywine women’s basketball game this Tuesday to support Odessa Grad and Ducks 1000-point scorer Delaney Burroughs who now suits up for the York Nittany Lions. The business major lead her team with 16 points and 32 min in an exciting back-and-forth game where they fell to Brandywine on a last second buzzer beating 3-point attempt by Burroughs which rattled out of the rim. We’re extremely proud of her immediate impact playing at the next level!

Congratulations to our Div I Softball commit to the University of Delaware, Gabriella Pudimott! Wishing her the best as she continues to compete at the next level. Gabby has gotten picked to be a part of the Carpenter Cup for the past 2 year. In 2022, she was picked for 2nd team All-Conference as a catcher in Flight B. In 2023 she was picked as the 1st team All-Conference catcher for Flight B and in 2024, she was 1st team at large catcher for Flight A. Gabby caught Ducks junior Samantha Stokes when she got her 100th strike out in 2023. When asked about her outlook on the upcoming season, head coach Sarah Adkins said: "This year, we are really excited and expecting for her to continue being the leader on the field. We're going to work together to make sure she gets the recognition she deserves this year from everyone in the conference and state. She deserves to be an All-State athlete and we're going to get her there."
