A Day in the Life of Cassandra Hitt

Meet Cassandra: Senior Project Manager & Hyperscale Trailblazer at NTI

When Cassandra joined NTI, the Hyperscale Division was just four people taking on projects across the country. Three years later, she’s helping lead the rapidly growing team — specializing in META projects and driving the buildout of NTI’s Hyperscale presence across the continental U.S.

As a Senior Project Manager, Cassandra focuses not only on keeping projects aligned with NTI’s quality standards and client expectations, but also on empowering the people behind them.

“My focus is predominantly on growing our team,” she shares. “I want to make sure they have the tools, support, and guidance they need to be successful."

A Career Built on Curiosity, Field Experience, and Continuous Learning

Though she graduated as a Civil Engineer, Cassandra credits the field — and a lot of hard-earned construction experience as the best classroom she could have asked for. Starting her career as a General Contractor gave her firsthand insight into what clients truly expect from a project manager.

When she joined NTI, she knew very little about telecommunications but she brought something just as valuable: the willingness to learn.

"The best thing you can do in your career is learn from those around you,” she says.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions or try on new hats."

Her Philosophy on Leadership & Project Management

For Cassandra, great project management isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about listening, adapting, and leaning on your team’s experience.

“You might build the world’s greatest schedule, but if your team isn’t bought in, it’s a flop,” she laughs.

Her style is grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and a talent for finding a new path forward when obstacles appear.

“There are always multiple roads to the same destination… and it helps to always have a good metaphor ready."

What Her Days Look Like Now

Every day is different on NTI’s Hyperscale team, but the current theme is scalability. Alongside client meetings, site visits, and the occasional curveball, Cassandra is building training documentation and SOPs to support a continued wave of new team members—especially with a busy 2026 on the horizon.

“The more we can do before the next boom,
the better we’ll be during it,” she says.

Fueled by Problem-Solving & People Development

Ask Cassandra what motivates her, and the answer is simple: solving problems and lifting others up.

Whether it’s navigating a tricky project issue, supporting NTI’s long-term goals, or helping another PM grow, she’s all in. “I love challenges and I love coming up with solutions,” she says. “We all bring strengths to the table, and I’m stoked to be part of that table.”

Life Beyond the Job

When she clocks out, things somehow get even busier. She and her fiancé, Travis, share their home with:

2.5 cats (yes—2.5!)
A 10-year-old goldfish
And a wonderful 15-year-old daughter

On top of that, Cassandra builds intricate stained-glass pieces, crochets, collects plants, runs a book club, and—only half-jokingly—contemplates the ethics of cloning so she can get more done. “It’s a wild little life,” she says, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

A day in the life of David Cervantes

Meet David Cervantes, a Superintendent in the Phoenix market. Since 2022, he has been doing work in Data Centers. Over the past three years, he and his team have built out sites for major cloud providers. He is currently leading a team working at a major data center build site. He is excited to get started on his next project!

Tell us about your career path and what led you to your current role?

Before I started in the telecom trade, I worked for a real estate title company. One day, I was talking with one of my cousins and mentioned that I was looking for a change. Now, almost 16 years later, I’m still in the telecom trade. I believe what has helped me grow and succeed is applying leadership skills I admired in past foremen and managers, while also learning from different leadership styles to shape the kind of leader I strive to be for my crew.

What kinds of education or training have helped you be successful in your current job?

Before entering the trade, I took some community college courses focused on computer science. I already have previous knowledge of networking and network topology. I knew what RJ45 connectors were, was familiar with switches and servers, and had a strong foundation in copper cabling, though I had limited experience with fiber at the time.

What characteristics do you think are needed to be successful in your role?

Strong communication skills, being adaptable and flexible, being friendly, and the ability to be firm when needed.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Number ONE: coffee. Next, I greet the crew and take care of any job logs or permits. Then we talk about what needs to be accomplished for the day and what I’d like to see worked on. I attend meetings and check in on the crew’s progress throughout the day. Finally, we clean up and close out for the day.

What do you love most about what you do?

I like using tools and seeing the empty data center floor become a functional masterpiece. I describe what we do as ‘Adult Legos’.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife at our kids’ extracurricular activities. My daughter (14) is a competitive dancer, my older son (11) is a competitive swimmer, and my youngest son (6) looks like he will follow in his brother’s footsteps and swim as well.

Tell us a fun or surprising fact about you?

I am a simple man with two goals in life. Enjoy our a dventures in life with my wife and raise decent human beings.

Expanding OSP Fiber Capacity on a Data Center Campus

After beginning a fiber placement project in a massive Data Center, NTI discovered and resolved a major engineering oversight to save the operator time, money, and resources for their future fiber connectivity.

Situation

Over the years, NTI has developed a strong reputation for fiber placement to support connectivity for major data centers and hyperscalers . From inside plant and outside plant, to infrastructure engineering projects, their teams have successfully completed high-profile work around the country on time and within budget. NTI’s long-term relationship with a large, global data center and colocation provider is based upon this reputation. During a typical ISP fiber engagement with this customer, NTI learned of a planned future project that would greatly extend connectivity on the campus. The Data Center consulted NTI for solution engineering support, where the team brought a critical flaw to the attention of the customer’s infrastructure engineers.

The Data Center’s private underground duct space was overpopulated with smaller count cables. This meant that there was limited space for the high-capacity fiber NTI would need to install in the upcoming project. Once the interconnection team sounded the alarm about the spatial concerns, NTI was asked to sift through the cables and find the solution.

The Data Center Campus extended across an array of buildings along a one-mile stretch and NTI began an audit of the existing underground connectivity ducts along the path. Along with Data Center engineers, the NTI team also identified poor cable management conditions in the utility holes throughout the campus. With mass amounts of connectivity needed to power the campus, the limited underground duct space put the Data Center in a bind. A solution would surely be labor intensive and require substantial retooling of the underground fiber spaces. Through their assessment, NTI confirmed that these space limitations would indeed impact future deployment plans.

One the Data Center and NTI finished their assessment, there were three key challenges to overcome:

The Data Center's earmarked underground duct spaces were severely overpopulated with smaller count cables. There was no where for all of the planned fiber to go.
Over the course of a mile on the Data Center campus, the cable organization inside utility holes was troubling at best. None of the holes were safe enough for technicians to place new fiber in the existing underground connectivity ducts.
Initial ideas to retool and freshly build these spaces looked cost-intensive. How could the Data Center stay ahead of the deadline and under budget while staying ready for future expansion?

Solution

Once NTI considered the existing fiber ducts, infrastructure, and anticipated deployment timeline, they found the best solution. They approached the Data Center operator with a fully re-imagined approach: what if the existing small-count fiber was replaced with high-capacity fiber? That way, the existing duct system could used without undertaking new OSP fiber construction, but capacity would be greatly increased.

The Data Center operator was fully onboard with the strategic choice to re-imagine resources, not reconstruct them. With approval from the customer, NTI re-engineered the connections between every campus building to phase out small-count fiber and replace it with high-count fiber. Once this upgrade was complete, all of the fiber was under a single managed infrastructure. While in each utility hole, NTI also addressed cable management so that the spaces were neat and organized, and safer for technicians to get in and out.

The revamped project strategy delivered even more perks for the Data Center team. Fresh, high-capacity fiber empowered customers to submit orders through the Data Center’s internal portals. It also helped the team leverage customer insights to design optimal internal networks. On the ground, the Data Center could even reroute the traffic throughout the campus to protect vital fiber junctions.

Project Highlights

One of the key partnership results of re-engineering the fiber connections on the Data Center Campus was that NTI established the standard construction model for the company for years to come. The turnkey solution saved countless hours and resources while bringing the vision for high-capacity fiber into reality.

NTI’s idea to pivot instead of re-build brought big returns and became the cornerstone of the Data Center’s infrastructure enhancement strategy moving forward.
In fact, NTI still uses this model today. Since the initial project, they’ve quickly and efficiently built five new Data Center Campuses for the same customer using this future-proof solution for high-capacity fiber. And, each upcoming build is expected to use the proven playbook model with only slight modifications.

3 Barriers to Building a Dark Fiber Network

Today, AI and machine learning are more than innovations, they are voracious bandwidth consumers that push the performance boundaries of the infrastructures that support them. Hyperscale cloud providers and network carriers are under pressure to provide the high-bandwidth, low-latency connections their customers need to get the most from these technologies. In response they’re leveraging dark fiber networks as an alternative to purchasing lit strands from carriers, as they’ve done in past.

Growth figures reflect this shift and the revenue opportunities for dark fiber providers. In 2022, the global dark fiber market was estimated to be USD 6.14 billion. By 2032, it’s projected to rise to 20.95 billion . Bryan McCombs of Critical Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a dark fiber provider, agrees there is a staggering demand for it, with more underground fiber being put into the ground now than ever before. “Dark fiber is the ideal solution for dealing with massive amounts of data that has to traverse between two or more sites,” he says. “It’s the absolute gold standard for delivering the low-latency solutions hyperscalers and carriers need.”

DARK FIBER NETWORK BENEFITS AND BARRIERS

As a dedicated connection, dark fiber is more reliable because customers no longer have to compete for bandwidth or capacity. It also offers more control and security, since customers manage it end-to-end on their own.

Although Data Center Post called dark fiber a “hidden gem” and the optimal choice for transporting the complex, intensive workloads of AI and machine learning, there are barriers to delivering that value.

For dark fiber providers, these include designing intelligent and diverse fiber routes for data to travel, dealing with rocky terrains and gaining right of way (ROW) permissions to pass through properties owned by others.

Based on our experience, the three barriers below represent the toughest hurdles in delivering dark fiber connectivity today.

MULTIPLE PATHWAYS AND PARTIES

If you want to use dark fiber to make the metro or long-haul site-to-site connections your customers need, the most prohibitive factors can be dealing with the multiple different entities, service providers, and physically separate pathways along the way. It’s not as simple as connecting point A and point B when there are existing overlapping networks and multiple landowners between them. It takes experience and out-of-the-box thinking to navigate those complexities.

That’s why it’s a good idea to start with a feasibility study of the proposed route to evaluate how the network infrastructure has been laid out in the area, as well as the parties involved in granting ROW access.

You may learn that you can run fiber down the median of an interstate where there’s much less rock or map a route that avoids railroad crossings and waterways. You may also be able to choose a path that minimizes the entities who need to grant permits. By streamlining the design, engineering, and permitting processes, we can help you find the shortest pathway with the fewest roadblocks to reduce capital outlay and implementation time.

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT AND LABOR SHORAGES

Like any fiber network construction project you undertake, you’ll be challenged with managing the logistics of having everything you need delivered on time. Those difficulties are compounded today by the lack of available trenching, boring, and plowing equipment and the trained workers needed to operate them.

This is especially true in hard-rock environments, like the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Starting in the fourth quarter of this year, Network Connex will be working with CIP on the Blue Ridge Run Network , a low-latency route spanning 767 miles to bring fiber broadband closer to rural communities in the Southeast region.

“The biggest challenge for us in underground fiber construction is where we’re building,” says McCombs. “It’s largely an all-rock environment, which is very expensive, labor-intensive and time consuming. There’s also limited equipment and operators that work in that medium.” Network Connex is supporting CIP with feasibility studies, fiber engineering, permitting services, and construction for the Blue Ridge Run Network.

On these and other rugged terrain projects, we use a recently introduced specialty tool to install conduit systems. Called an all-terrain directional drill, the AT120 features the largest inner rod produced to date. Currently, there are only a few of these game-changing machines on the East coast and Network Connex has one of them.

AGILE INSTALLATION TEAMS ARE BECOMING MORE CRITICAL TO MEETING CONSTRUCTION DEADLINES

While skilled talent challenges aren’t new to the data center industry, the shift into submarkets exacerbates the impact. There’s a shortage of skilled technicians in a lot of these locations. We also provide a single point of responsibility that simplifies distributed data center construction projects. RESOURCE DEMANDS DURING AND BEYOND THE BUILD

To ensure the build aligns with the agreed-upon design standards and scope of work, you’ll need eyes onsite along the entire construction route.

Once the fiber is lit and operational, customers will expect regular, on-going route maintenance and management, including quick resolution for any service disruptions. For long-distance dark fiber routes, accidents can occur anywhere along the path, calling for emergency teams to quickly be dispatched to the site to restore connectivity.

Beyond on-going maintenance and crisis management, there can be unforeseen factors that cause additional work for you along the fiber route. Whether it’s the Department of Transportation coming in to widen the road, or a developer coming in to modify the land and add utilities for a new data center build, these new developments can trigger a need for adjustments to the fiber route.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as just moving your cable a foot deeper. Other times, it means building an entirely new conduit pathway and doing a hot cut to transition network traffic to the new cable, which can be a complex and costly relocation project.

Aurora City Council this week approves NTI to expand city’s fiber network

City leans on longstanding partnership to bring fiber network to more metro infrastructure

DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES , April 3, 2024 / EINPresswire.com / -- The Aurora (Illinois) City Council this week approved spending more than a million dollars with Downers Grove-based National Technologies (NTI) , a Network Connex Company, for projects expanding the city’s fiber optic network. Following an initial project begun in 2022, this move will accelerate fiber expansion to water lift stations and wells. NTI has been Aurora’s fiber provider since 2018, and according to a memo from city staff, the company "has exceeded expectations" during the life of this partnership. The planned 2024 work, which entails running new fiber routes as well as field repair and maintenance of the existing fiber network, is a significant step towards improved communication infrastructure for the city.

Whether it’s the sky-rocketing growth of artificial intelligence (AI), the shrinking availability of data center space, a tight labor market, or continuing materials shortages, data center build out projects will face significant challenges this year.

The coming months will call for unprecedented changes in the digital infrastructure. The focus will be on untangling kinks in the supply chain and gaining the agility to place data centers—and the teams to connect them—when and where they’re needed. And the goal will be to speed build out times for data center deployments in both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) environments.

AI AND GENAI ARE TRANSFORMING THE DATA CENTER INFRASTRUCTURE

AI spending has taken a giant leap. The potential of AI is enormous, but so is the pressure it puts on data center operators. As customer demand for this technology increases, global spending in the AI infrastructure market is expected to grow as much as 44 percent by 2029 .

While AI can reduce human errors, automate repetitive processes and lead to faster analysis and decision making, the resource-guzzling dataloads involved in doing so elevate the need for more computing power, capacity, connectivity, and space. But it’s not only about greater demands, it’s about different demands.

An entirely different architectural approach is taking root. In the AI-optimized data center, the architecture is different, the infrastructure requirements are different, and the layout is different. These differences will magnify as GenAI takes off. While AI focuses on automating human tasks, this next generation of AI focuses on mimicking human-created content. GenAI tools, like ChatGPT, can create human-like conversations with a website chatbot or even write a blog. (Not this one!)

DATA CENTER SPACE SHORTAGES ARE PUSHING CONSTRUCTION INTO NEW MARKETS

Data Center Frontier’s Rich Miller says the AI boom, coupled with other hyperscale users gobbling up most of the capacity in development, is creating a data center space crunch in many major markets. With as much as a four-year lead time from design to build, data center operators can’t build out facilities fast enough to keep up with the demand.

Customers are cutting loose from geographic constraints. Whether deploying their own data centers or considering colocation, customers are looking beyond these primary data center markets to submarkets across the US. Companies such as Amazon have already put a nationwide distribution strategy into play by constantly evaluating new locations, based on customer demand. In January alone, the company was cleared to build two new data centers , one in Mesa, Arizona and another in Round Rock, Texas.

While some data center fit out providers focus on a single local area or region, our presence across the US means we can help customers scale their implementations with the same quality and speed on a national level.

The need for nationwide connectivity is growing. Extending connectivity between these distributed data centers is the next challenge. With crews deployed across the country, we can lay and connect fiber both inside and outside the data center.

For example, we’re currently running fiber optic cables hundreds of miles to connect data centers for one of our customers. Our ability to handle both inside plant ISP fiber and outside plant OSP fiber is a differentiator for us.

MODULAR DESIGNS AND PREFAB COMPONENTS ARE SPEEDING DELPLOYMENT

Working with prefabricated infrastructure components is quickly growing as a tactic for bringing capacity online faster and more economically. Prefabricated modular design cuts construction times , reduces costs, and improves safety, quality, and sustainability since more work occurs in controlled manufacturing settings.

Pre-packaged power rooms and cooling equipment are examples of these more flexible installations. They arrive onsite, pre-built with all the options you want, ready to be plugged in and turned on. We can connect modules to an existing campus network or finish off internal installation and connectivity.

We build remotely, as well. For example, we install electrical components, patch panels, and fiber boxes in a cabinet located in our warehouse. Then, we wheel it fully loaded into your data center. This process calls for two people onsite, rather than 12 technicians installing separate components. We’re currently expanding our pre-fabrication capabilities to accelerate data center tenant fit out projects.

SUPPLY CHAIN PROBLEMS ARE JEOPARDIZING MATERIALS AVAILABILITY

Shortages are expected to continue. When Covid hit, shutting down supply lines from overseas manufacturers, the raw materials needed for data center construction became scarce. Even though data center operators and hyperscale cloud providers were always under pressure to get raw materials from US suppliers, they were unable to buy everything required in this country.

It was also a challenge to keep core transportation systems operational with a skeleton workforce and truck driver shortages that immobilized the global supply chain.

Today, this convoluted set of supply chain circumstances continues. In fact, one research study found that over 75 percent of organizations reported disruptions of some type over the last 18 months.

Supplier relationships are more important than ever. Over the years, we’ve developed strong manufacturer and partner relationships . This close collaboration gives us more leverage to prioritize distribution where and when materials are needed the most.

Local logistics and warehousing are increasing availability. Data center fit out providers are taking advantage of local warehousing options to store products closer to end users. Our nationwide footprint enables us to negotiate logistics with local manufacturing and distribution partners. This leads to more efficient purchasing and delivery, as well as the room to stage materials in lay down yards for just-in-time delivery to the project site.

We all know a dirty connection is bad, but it’s not always as easy as “clean and reconnect”. There is a lot happening at a microscopic level that only can be seen through a fiber scope or an end face inspection probe. With these tools we can see the fibers core that ranges 9 µm to 62.5 µm (µm=Micron/Micrometer). In comparison, a human hair is between 17 µm and 181 µm. When comparing the size of the core, which carries most of the signal, to other materials such as a hair (17-181µm), silica dust (1-100µm), or a skin flake (0.5-10µm), we can see how easy it is for the path to become obstructed.

To go a little further, the spring in a Multi-fiber Push On (MPO) connector can exert as much as 20 N (Newtons) of force. 20 N is equal to 4.4961788774192 pounds of force. As the connectors are mated in a bulkhead, every dust particle caught in between the two connectors has that 4.5 lb. crushing it between the surfaces of each connector. This force can easily cause particles to explode into several smaller particles, and sometimes more resilient particles can even scratch, pit or even shatter the ends of fibers, making them unusable. Don’t forget that most fiber test equipment has vulnerable connectors as well. Damaging these could lead to costly repairs, equipment down time, and false results.

ABCs

So, if static electricity is turning the fiber into a particulate magnet, attracting all the nasties we don’t want, how do we prevent these microscopic obstructions and/or damage? It’s simple, we sing the ABC’s: Always Be Cleaning. The most common method of cleaning fiber is to use 99% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and a lint-free wipe. But there are a few things you should know about that IPA before you pick more up. IPA has hygroscopic (the characteristic of tending to absorb moisture from the air) properties. A bottle of 99.9% IPA that is opened and exposed to the air can lose 7% of its strength within 15 minutes. As IPA evaporates, it also absorbs moisture and other contaminants in the air. So, your IPA in that refillable pump bottle is no longer 99.9% IPA, but a diluted IPA contaminated with all the nasties from the air. Also, IPA doesn’t dissolve oils, instead only lifting the oils from the surface. So, without following the wet clean with a dry clean, the oils can resettle or spread. The friction of cleaning is also imparting triboelectric charging to the fiber. What a conundrum.

If only we could clean fiber without turning it into a magnet or contaminating it... What, we can? Some mad scientists have developed several fiber optic cleaning solutions that can aid us in this war on grime. These products are very effective in many situations. They come in hermetically sealed pump bottles that eliminate evaporation and contamination as the cleaner is sealed inside the bottle. They also have antistatic agents that reduce the attraction of dust particles. They dry faster, reducing the chance of an arc flash in a splicer. What’s that, these solutions aren’t flammable? So that also means they’re not Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) items, which also means easier storage and cheaper shipping.

So, it’s cheaper, more effective, and easier to transport (even to fly with). You can find so many options to replace the old school 99.9% IPA with a simple search on the web. Open your mind, give one a try, and form your own opinion. Just remember your ABCs.

Experienced Executive to Lead Communications Infrastructure Services Company

Larocca has been named Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Larocca joins Network Connex with more than 20 years of experience leading and managing highly profitable companies in industrial technology and services sectors.

Prior to joining Network Connex, Mr. Larocca was the President & CEO of Nortek Control, a global leader in artificial intelligence, facial recognition, smart connected systems for security and home automation, access control, and digital health markets, leading the company through a strong growth phase until its sale in mid-2021. Previously, he held CEO and executive management positions at Luminance Brands and OK International, a subsidiary of Dover Corporation. He was also COO of EMCORE Corporation, a leading provider of components and subsystems for optical high-speed data and video networks, adding experience in fiber and telecoms, and started his career within General Electric’s Commercial and Industrial Sales division. Mr. Larocca holds a Bachelor of Science from Clemson University and an MBA from the University of Southern California. NTI Acquires Precision Design Services, Inc.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nat Tech, LLC (National Technologies), a wholly-owned operating subsidiary of NTI Connect, LLC (NTI), a nationwide provider of mission-critical deployment services for fiber optic, wireless and data center infrastructure, announced today the acquisition of Precision Design Services, Inc.’s (PDS) fiber network engineering business. Headquartered in Morris Plains, NJ, and serving the greater New York area for more than 20 years, PDS provides design, engineering, and project management for telecommunications and data communications systems.

Primary services offered by PDS include route design, survey and drawings of OSP and ISP networks, audit and as-built production, testing and related fiber system database production, and facility infrastructure planning. PDS will operate under NTI’s National Technologies brand.
