Beacon Hill, Leicestershire

Beacon Hill is a few miles from Loughborough in the countryside. The top car park is the best for parking and is not much lower than the hill itself. It's an easy walk from the top car park and suitable for most people as you're nearly already at the top. The views are the best I've seen for the least amount of effort involved and very extensive. On a clear day you can see Nottingham, Derby, Lincoln and the Cathedral, Boston Stump, The Peak District and planes coming in to land at East Midlands Airport. Their are toilets at the top car park and you pay at the ramped barrier before it lets you in. Beacon Hill is especially beautiful when snowing and even on Bonfire night, when all the fires and fireworks are going off

Higger Tor

Good to climb both Higgars from Fox House Inn, where there is good beer, log fires and accommodation. Some good scrambling to be had on the West side of Higgar Tor so approach it from that side instead of the main path. At the summit head for Burbage and back down the main path to the quarry where there'a few more scrambles worthy of note. A good 5 miles round trip with some decent scrambles. Great 15 peaks style training.

Kinder Scout

Easiest way up is from Hayfield Campsite following the pack horse trail up to Edale Cross - gentle gradient and paved at lower levels and leads up to a good nexus of paths that can take you over to Edale or across the southern and western ends of the plateau.

Safety notes:
- Weather (esp cloud base) changes VERY quickly on Kinder. A clear sky can become low cloud incredibly fast. If the cloud base starts dropping and you're not intimately familiar with the area, start heading downhill ASAP.
- Take more water than you think you'll need.
- Next to no cover at all on the plateau. One or two overhanging rocks, everywhere exposed to wind.

The Chevin

Depart Bus Station, walk towards the hill then west towards Church and at corner of Kirkgate south up Station road. Over bypass bridge and cross road. Path direct up hill via steep steps through wood. Then open fell to top. Stand on top block and look down Wharfedale towards Almscliff Crag and the White Horse of Kilburn. To the North and west you can see Simons seat and Great Whernside often covered in snow in winter.
Walk east on top path to East Chevin Road and over to the Danefield Estate following any number of circular waymarked paths.On the North side of the ridge are the famous Caley Crags a mecca for climbers bouldering in summer. now becoming overgrown in places by Himalayan Balsam weed. Beyond Caley Crags walk along forest path back to East Chevin Road Turn right for 150 yards walk down road to Car Park on left and follow path under Chevin Buttress back to the White House Café with Limited opening times and route back to Otley.
Recomended Café The pink Teapot Behind Orchardgate Near the bus station.
Pubs: The junction Bondgate, and the old Cock opposite the bus sta. Food: Bondgate Bakery on the way to the Junkie.

Distance 6 to 8 miles depending on Danefield loop. 1000ft ascent. Local guide Arthur Gemmill Chevin Walks.
