DOMESTIC INTERNAL DEFENSE™ (DID)

A variation on the Foreign Internal Defense (FID) mission that is a major component of US Army Special Forces operations.

Rethinking Security

Our society is in trouble. From the pandemic to economic recession, looming war, unchecked immigration, and an alarming number of industrial accidents, anyone paying attention has noticed that everything feels less safe and predictable these days.
Whether you're in charge of a company or municipality that has critical facilities and infrastructure, or you're a rural land owner looking after what's yours, the status quo is no longer viable. Rent-a-cops and cameras and call-center alarm systems are no match for determined opposition.

Corporate sabotage is a thing. Corporate espionage is a thing. Social engineering is a thing. Securing facilities that cost hundreds of millions of dollars (on the low end) is not a check-the-box exercise.  These are complex multi-dimensional problems that require specialized solutions. And they have to be implemented with minimal disruption to facility operations.

On what may seem to be the total opposite end of the spectrum, the threats that rural property owners in the US face now (especially those in border states) resemble the threats faced by their peers in other countries. Widespread trespassing, theft, and vandalism are the first signs, and we have been seeing them increasingly in the last two years. What happens next depends upon the response.
It turns out that the Foreign Internal Defense (FID) mission, which has been the bread and butter of US Green Beret units all over the world for decades, has a lot to teach us about securing high-value facilities, rural property, and small communities in today's America.

Mercury DID was formed to bridge this gap - to provide the full range of Foreign Internal Defense capabilities right here at home. We call it Domestic Internal Defense™, or DID. Our consultants are primarily retired US Army Special Forces soldiers with decades of experience conducting FID missions in hostile environments.

As sad as it is to say, the United States is becoming a hostile environment. We leave it to the pundits and philosophers to work out why it's happening and how to get back on track. Our mission is to enable those charged with defending what matters most to them. Our primary tool is a well-tested process that has evolved through the experiences of Green Beret teams down range in the conflicts you know about (and plenty you don't).

A quick side note about the unique qualifications of Green Berets:
While US Special Forces soldiers are highly trained in, and routinely practice, assault tactics and techniques, the Foreign Internal Defense mission is really not about the gun fight. It's about what happens before the gunfight for people who are likely to be outgunned, outmanned, out-trained, and too committed to their humanity to survive on their own. A handful of Green Berets, with whatever can be carried on their back, can make contact, build trust, educate, coach, and create a capable force out of any group that fears death or subjugation and refuses to go quietly. Turning a few into many. This is a specialized skill that is only developed in Green Berets.

Once again, it is a shame that this capability is now required within our own borders. But it is. More than most people realize.

When the FID mission is adapted to our current domestic environment, the process for our clients looks like this:
  1. Building threat awareness
  2. Collaborating on Attainable Security
  3. Designing and implementing the right surveillance system
  4. Setting the security strategy
  5. Creating the Defensive Plan, which becomes the Operational Playbook
  6. Training on and practicing the Operational Playbook
  7. Setting 30, 90, and 180-day goals
  8. Coordinating sourcing of equipment, gear, installation, and training
  9. Developing long term plans that adjust the security posture as the environment changes

For Farms and Ranches:
  • Building community - either starting a network or integrating into an existing one - focused on preparedness, communication, and coordinating activities in the immediate vicinity

The second time I discovered a cut fence and truck tracks leading onto my ranch, it was clear that we needed to really take a closer look at security.

It's easy to hire someone to install security cameras and alarm systems. It's also easy to hire armed guards to watch over your facilities. But Mercury is the only company I know of that comes out and creates a tailored security plan based upon your facility's specifics, the threats faced by similar companies, and the resources available.  Even better, they help with everything from sourcing gear and supplies to coordinating training. They're the one-stop-shop for peace of mind for people like me who are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of critical facilities.
