You hit the brakes! **First — governance begins with oneself.** This story is about misplaced responsibility and the illusion of control. In short: 1. John keeps shouting “brake!”, but doesn’t realize that he himself is the one driving. He worries, gets angry, blames Mike — but fails to see his own role in what’s happening. 2. Mike is not really the driver; he is a projection. Fear, guilt, and anger are shifted onto him. It’s easier than admitting: “I’m the one in control — and I’m not stopping.” 3. The fact that they are stoners symbolizes an altered state of consciousness. There are emotions and moral reactions, but no clear awareness of agency. 4. The repeating pattern (grandma → grandpa → children) Shows escalating stakes, while awareness still doesn’t appear — until the final line. Deeper meaning The story is about a person who: • reacts emotionally to consequences, • fiercely condemns “others,” • but does not see that the source of action is himself. Universal formula of the story “I’m outraged by what’s happening — therefore someone else must be guilty” instead of “If something is happening, maybe I’m the one driving.” In the language of the psyche: • Fear and morality without awareness lead to catastrophe • Awareness of one’s role creates the possibility to stop The way we build ourselves, our habits, our inner state, and the way we shape the space around us — that is how we live. Our external circumstances are merely a reflection of our inner order. **But it is important to understand: the steering wheel is in our hands.** We choose the direction, the speed, and even who we take along as passengers. **Self-governance** is the foundation of governing projects, people, business, and life as a whole. If a person does not hold the steering wheel, then the road governs them — at least until the first turn. In most situations, we remain slaves to our habits rather than masters of our condition. Let’s kick off the new year with a **10 km hike through the Duinen**, one of the most diverse nature areas in the Netherlands. Think dunes, forests, open views and maybe even wild animals! **We take bus 166 at 10:12 from Alkmaar station at platform K to Plein, Bergen Busstation.** Many members are travelling from Amsterdam so you could join from there as well!
