Math Alliance at the American Mathematical Society

The Math Alliance, a nationally recognized initiative that has broadened participation in the mathematical sciences since 2007, now has its home at the American Mathematical Society.

participants at a Field of Dreams conferenceEffective September 2025, the AMS has assumed full administrative, financial, and legal responsibility for the Math Alliance’s programming, ensuring its continuity and long-term impact. The AMS provides the Alliance with a stable, mission-aligned institutional home while expanding opportunities for engagement across the broader mathematical community.

Founded as the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences, the Math Alliance provides support to students in the transition to graduate studies in the mathematical sciences and beyond. Its Mentor Network, Field of Dreams Conference, and strong national partner network have made it a model for inclusive academic excellence.

Washington Convention Center in January 2026. Going forward, the AMS plans to maintain the fall schedule for the event while enhancing its visibility, logistics, and impact through the Society’s meetings infrastructure.

Math Alliance at AMS Scholars

Math Alliance at AMS Scholars are mathematical or statistical sciences students, either undergraduates or students enrolled in a terminal master's or postbaccalaureate program, who have the ability and desire to earn a doctoral degree in a quantitative science and who come from communities or regions that are underrepresented in these fields. To become a Scholar, you must be nominated by a Math Alliance at AMS Mentor and meet the following criteria:

  • You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has attended a U.S. high school and who comes from an area or community that is rural or remote, or a community that is underrepresented in the mathematical or statistical sciences.
  • You are unlikely to pursue graduate study in a mathematical or statistical science without benefiting from the Math Alliance at AMS.

Scholar nominations are currently closed and will reopen in 2026.

Math Alliance at AMS Mentors

Mentors play a crucial role in identifying Scholars and nominating them, and Scholars and Mentors can participate in a wide range of programs. Since 2007, almost 3,000 students have been Math Alliance Scholars, and nearly 1,500 faculty members across the country are Math Alliance Mentors.

Attending the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings? If you are at an institution that is interested in becoming more involved with active mentoring of undergraduates to foster success in graduate studies and beyond, please come by the AMS Programs booth on Monday, January 5 from 3 - 4:00 pm to learn about how to support the next generation of mathematicians.

Undergraduates seeking a strong network as they navigate their math education and look ahead to graduate studies, come by and find out about the possibilities for students.

Math Alliance Alumni

The Math Alliance has been strengthened over the years by the dedication, achievements, and leadership of its Scholars and alumni. As a Math Alliance alumnus, you are part of a nationwide community that has helped broaden participation and excellence in the mathematical sciences. We are eager to reconnect with Math Alliance alumni and to learn from your experiences. Your insights, feedback, and continued engagement are essential to shaping the future of the program and ensuring that it continues to serve students and the broader mathematics community effectively.

We invite you to complete a brief survey to share your experiences with the Math Alliance—both during your time as a Scholar and beyond. Your responses will help guide future initiatives and alumni engagement efforts, and will inform how the program continues to grow. Thank you for the lasting contributions you have made to the Math Alliance, and for taking the time to stay connected.
