Louisiana State Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners

Welcome to the LSRTBE

In 1984, the Louisiana Medical Radiation Health and Safety Act, R.S. 37:3200 through R.S. 37:3221, provided that, to safeguard life and health by preventing excessive and improper exposure to ionizing radiation, any person practicing or offering to practice as a radiologic technologist in this state shall submit evidence that they are qualified to do so and shall be allowed to practice as a radiologic technologist. The Act created a board of examiners with regulatory authority responsible for examining, licensing and regulating qualified applicants as Radiologic technologists and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public from the misuse of ionizing radiation. This law pertains to both diagnostic and therapeutic uses of ionizing radiation.

Big News in Louisiana!

Limited X-Ray Machine Operator (LXMO) Permit

The LSRTBE has approved Limited X‑Ray Machine Operator (LXMO) permits coming January 2026!

LXMO allows trained operators to perform X‑rays under the supervision of a licensed radiologic technologist, and is exclusively for urgent care centers, private physician offices, and private clinics.

The LXMO initiative helps address the current shortage of full technologists in smaller healthcare settings while emphasizing quality and safety.

Let’s help deliver quick, safe, and high-quality care by welcoming LXMO permit holders into the team—under expert supervision. It’s a great win for patient access and provider collaboration.

Training programs: Want to offer LXMO education?

Programs wanting to offer official LXMO training can apply now to become LSRTBE‑approved. Submit your application by mail to: LSRTBE, 3108 Cleary Ave, Suite 207, Metairie, LA 70001.

Limited X-Ray Machine Operator (LXMO) Permit Process

Once you are accepted into an LSRTBE-approved LXMO program, the following steps will apply. Your program instructor can assist you throughout this process.

After your program confirms completion of your didactic education, you may qualify for a one-year temporary LXMO permit. This temporary permit authorizes you to enter the clinical setting and begin completing the required clinical competencies.

Upon successful completion and verification of all clinical requirements, you may apply for a two-year LXMO permit, pending successful completion of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Limited Scope Examination for Louisiana. Your LXMO Clinical Competency Log must be submitted at the time of application for the two-year permit.

**Please note that once the individual successfully passes the ARRT LXMO exam for Louisiana and receives a two-year LXMO permit that they do not require direct supervision by a licensed technologist.**

LXMO clinical hours cannot be paid working hours. If an individual is completing a LXMO program at the request of their employer, all clinical hours must be completed outside of scheduled work hours.
