StartMail is a privacy-conscious email service managed by the same team that runs the StartPage privacy search engine. Thanks to the integrated use of PGP, StartMail is fully interoperable with other PGP users, and it can also send encrypted emails to non-PGP users who must know a secret of your choosing in order to open the email. One of the most notable features of this service is that PGP encryption is performed on the server side, in other words it is not end-to-end encryption.StartPage mentions the practical problems with JavaScript-based browser encryption that we discussed in the introduction to this article as a reason for them to do this, but it was certainly a controversial decision.StartPage uses a mixture of open-source and closed-source components. open-source and closed-source components, which doesn't help the issue either.
StartMail is based in the Netherlands, which, like Switzerland, has traditionally been seen as a privacy-friendly country, but has recently passed shocking new surveillance laws. One of the things I really like about StartMail is that it can create an unlimited number of disposable email addresses, StartMail doesn't have a dedicated mobile app but fully supports IMAP and SMTP, which means you can use any third-party email app with the service.
