Policy momentum is encouraging, but without clear alignment across AB 1201, SB 54, and SB 1383, we risk creating confusion that undermines the very systems we’re trying to improve. Certified compostable products deliver the most value when infrastructure, labeling, and policy are working in sync. A more coordinated approach will be key to reducing contamination, supporting organics diversion, and ensuring these materials reach the right end-of-life pathway. #FixAB1201
California bills on compostable packaging are moving forward—but key gaps remain. BPI supports policies that strengthen circular systems, yet current proposals don’t fully address the underlying challenges facing compostables in CA—especially alignment with existing laws like AB 1201, SB 54, and SB 1383. We’re continuing to advocate for smart, coordinated policy solutions that enable certified compostable products to work as intended—supporting organics diversion, reducing contamination, and building a true circular bioeconomy, in CA and beyond. Are bioplastic manufacturers insulated from the price volatility impacting traditional plastics? Natur-Tec’s Vineet Dalal, Vice President and Director of Global Market Development, recently joined Cathy Wurzer of Minnesota Public Radio to explore this question. In the interview, Vineet shares that while bioplastics are less directly tied to fossil fuel price swings, global events, such as the war in the Middle East, are still driving up production costs. Currently, costs remain comparatively lower, but longer-term pressures may emerge as disruptions in the nitrogen supply chain begin to affect feedstock pricing. As Vineet notes: “Even though bioplastics are plant-based and not directly impacted by higher energy prices, this is a reminder that geopolitical events can influence every part of the global economy.” Listen to the full interview: https://lnkd.in/gAUNXA6b #NaturTec #Bioplastics #Sustainability #ZeroWaste #WasteLess #Regenerative #Interview

Natur-Tec is proud to be selected as one of seven companies in the 2026 cohort of the International Fresh Produce Association Packaging Innovation Program. Supported by a $5M investment from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service, this initiative is accelerating the development of packaging solutions that extend shelf life, reduce food loss and waste, and meet rapidly evolving global regulations. Our project focus is advancing PFAS- and PVDC-free compostable barrier laminates designed for moisture- and oxygen-sensitive applications like dried fruits and tree nuts, and delivering performance without compromising sustainability. At Natur-Tec, our mission is clear: replace persistent, harmful plastics with high-performance, compostable alternatives that support a truly circular economy. Proud to support ICAW 2026 and be part of a community driving real progress in composting and soil health. At Natur-Tec, we see every day how composting not only diverts waste but also creates tangible value by returning nutrients to the soil and supporting a more circular system. We’re grateful to play a role alongside so many committed partners working to expand access, education, and impact. Here’s to continuing to grow awareness, improve organics recovery, and help communities turn waste into a resource. 🌱 #ICAW2026 #Compost #SoilHealth #Sustainability #FeedTheSoil
A big thank you to all of our incredible sponsors for supporting ICAW 2026. Your partnership helps us expand compost education, promote healthier soils, reduce waste, and inspire communities around the world to take action. Because of your support, ICAW continues to grow and reach more schools, businesses, municipalities, and individuals each year. We truly appreciate your commitment to a more sustainable future. As we celebrate Earth Day and the progress California has made in food scrap recycling, new data reveals that proposed restrictions on certified compostable bag liners could put that progress at risk. 🌍 A recent statewide survey and independent “overs” study show that certified compostable liners are helping Californians participate in organics recycling, not contaminating it. Key findings include: - 62% of Californians regularly separate food scraps, and another 15% do so occasionally - 43% say losing access to compostable liners would reduce or end their participation - +99% of plastic film contamination found in compost overs was conventional plastic, not certified compostables These findings reinforce what composters and municipal programs have seen firsthand: the real contamination issue is conventional plastic, while certified compostable liners improve participation, reduce contamination, and help divert food waste from landfill. As policymakers consider legislation like AB 1201, it’s critical to recognize the unintended consequences of restricting tools that residents rely on to compost successfully. Without practical solutions like certified compostable liners, participation drops, contamination rises, and progress toward organics diversion goals is threatened. If California wants to reduce landfill waste and tackle microplastics, the path forward should support the systems that are already working. In the midst of ongoing policy debates that could impact the role of certified compostables in California, the City of Modesto stands out as a clear example of progress in action. Rather than stepping back, Modesto is leaning in and actively working to increase organics capture rates through targeted education and infrastructure improvements, supported by a Composting Consortium Grant. A key initiative includes relabeling residential carts with clear, visual guidance featuring certified compostable products alongside accepted materials like food scraps and yard waste. By incorporating recognizable icons and certification cues, the City is helping residents confidently distinguish compostables from look-alike materials and sort correctly at the curb. It’s a practical, scalable approach that shows how thoughtful program design can strengthen organics diversion while reducing confusion.
