Mapping the first mile shouldn't take years. Historically, digitizing commodity processing facilities that drive global supply chains meant months of expensive manual work or custom model training. Epoch’s Jake Wilkins decided to prove there’s a better way. Using the AlphaEarth Foundations Satellite Embedding dataset (part of Google Earth AI), a laptop, and just 50 labels, Epoch detected nearly 70% of Sumatra’s palm oil mills in a single afternoon. By identifying these "first-mile" facilities, Epoch can delineate supply sheds and pinpoint exactly where deforestation and emissions are concentrated, moving beyond supplier questionnaires to generate compliance-ready, transparent data for a more resilient planet.
