Developers weren’t just builders. They were gatekeepers. If you couldn’t code, you didn’t create. You waited. On engineering bandwidth. On roadmaps. On someone else’s priorities. Syntax was the wall. Know where the semicolon went? You shipped. Didn’t? You stood outside. That divide shaped more than workflows. It shaped status. Developers got the leverage. The scarcity gave them the power to decide what shipped and when. Everyone else adapted around them. It wasn’t about being smarter. It was about access — and access wasn’t evenly distributed. Some people were in the right rooms early, tripped into syntax, and built from there. Others never got the chance. That was the difference. But syntax was only the first kind of alpha. The second was quieter. Harder to see. More enduring. System knowledge. Knowing which database could survive Black Friday traffic. When to debounce vs. throttle. How to shard writes across regions. Not just writing code — architecting it. That’s the tacit layer. Built from war stories. Outages. Scaling pain. Years in the trenches. It’s still here. And it still matters. For now. I remember the first time I tried to shortcut it. I’d tell Claude what I wanted. It would spit out code. I’d paste it. It would break. I’d send back the error. It would try again. Loop by loop, something shifted. Reddit called it “copy-paste monkey.” They saw a hack. I saw a door opening. People who’d been locked out started building demos. Then products. Then real companies. The wall between “technical” and “non-technical” was never about intelligence. It was about translation. And now, translation is free. What matters now isn’t syntax. It’s clarity. How well you can think. Break things down. Iterate. That’s what the agent understands. And that’s what it rewards. The syntax advantage is gone. Developer privilege is flattening. System knowledge is next. Today, the agent can’t always choose the perfect database. But if you tell it the trade-offs, it will. If you give it context, it will architect with precision. That tacit edge still holds. But only for now. Soon, even that will be embedded. And leverage will shift again — to anyone who can think clearly enough to guide the machine. That shift isn’t coming. It’s here. And it’s not going away.

After 7+ years grinding as a Senior Frontend Engineer (and now leading teams), if I was personally coaching someone with solid experience for a Google L3/L4 frontend role today, this is the no-BS plan I’d hand them. Your schedule design beats raw volume every single time. Don’t just sit there for 8 hours straight. Split your day on purpose. → Mornings (when your brain is at peak): pure DSA and problem solving
→ Late afternoon / evening: deep JavaScript, browser internals, and React
→ 10–15 minutes every day: record yourself explaining a concept out loud Four focused hours a day, done consistently, will smoke someone doing 10 sloppy hours. DSA expectations for Google frontend roles are realistic, not insane. You’re not training for ICPC. You’re training to think clearly under pressure. Lock in these topics until they’re muscle memory: → Arrays + Strings (including all the classic modifications)
→ Two pointers & sliding window
→ Stack problems + recursion patterns
→ Tree DFS/BFS (including binary tree classics)
→ Basic graph BFS/DFS (you won’t get Dijkstra, relax) → Closure mechanics and lexical scope inside out
→ Prototype chain and modern class syntax pitfalls
→ Event loop, micro/macrotasks, starvation scenarios
→ Implement debounce/throttle from scratch in <5 minutes
→ Promise chaining vs async/await gotchas
→ Event delegation and capture/bubble phases
→ Common memory leak patterns (listeners, timers, big objects)
→ call / apply / bind differences and real use cases If you hesitate for even a second explaining any of these verbally, keep grinding. Best way I’ve seen mid-senior folks level up fast: → Read the relevant chapters on javascript.info or MDN
→ Immediately open a blank file and re-implement it
→ Close the file and explain it to an imaginary junior — out loud React depth that actually matters at Google. Tutorials won’t cut it anymore. Be fluent in: → Full hooks mental model and dependency array rules
→ When to reach for useRef vs useState vs derived state
→ Controlled vs uncontrolled and when each wins
→ Reconciliation, keys, and unnecessary re-render debugging
→ useMemo / useCallback / memo done right (and when to skip them)
→ Proper async patterns (RSC is rare at L3/L4, but suspense + error boundaries matter)
→ Context anti-patterns and splitting → Critical rendering path from HTML → DOM → CSSOM → render tree → paint
→ What triggers layout, paint, composite
→ Flexbox vs Grid trade-offs with real examples
→ Semantic HTML + proper ARIA roles + focus management
→ Lazy loading, preload/prefetch, image formats
→ Core Web Vitals and how to actually move the needle Behavioral – sound like a human, not a robot. Prepare 5–6 strong, recent stories you can twist to fit almost any question. Ironically, the only devs I see actually succeeding with vibe coding are senior engineers. They’re the ones who can guide AI, validate its output, and debug when things go off-track, all without breaking a sweat. Everyone else just vibes until the whole thing collapses under misunderstood logic and unchecked assumptions. AI helps you code faster, sure. But if you don’t know where you’re going, you’re just speeding toward a mess.

If you're applying for a software engineering position through a company's website, and the application won't go through because of a configuration issue, and you notify them of the problem and tell them how to fix it, that should be an automatic bye through a couple of interview rounds, right? Right?

If you're looking for a new docs framework for your dev tool, I can't recommend Docusaurus enough. 1. You can change the appearance of any component—no matter how big or small—by ejecting its raw React code into your source tree. I've ejected almost all of its major components and restyled them with Tailwind. 2. It supports content written with MDX, which is like Markdown but better. MDX lets you write JSX tags so you can render React components (like badges and banners) directly inline your content. No more messy templating. 3. It bundles Prism for code snippet highlighting. So you if you want to change how each and every token of your language gets styled—which I do—you can override it with a simple centralized map—which I have. 4. You can swap out its on-site search engine with Algolia, now widely considered the best option for developer sites. It is, in other words, the perfect tool for people like me who are obsessed with every pixel.

You don't need to hire a software farm for anything anymore. You need one developer who sits next to you for 6 weeks and learns how your business runs. Not how it looks in a deck. How it actually runs. The messy inbox system. The Notion doc nobody follows. The 4-step process your EA does manually every morning. A good AI developer, someone who works in n8n, Claude, and modern automation tools, turns that into systems that run without you. We placed one with a 12-person e-commerce brand. In 8 weeks he'd automated their order exception workflow, their influencer outreach follow-up, and their weekly reporting. The admin team is being trained in AI. Those that don’t adopt are gone. 3 tasks. Each one was eating 6-8 hours a week from someone on the team. That’s money in your pocket. 416h per year. That’s almost a full quarter's worth of work. A dev shop's savings don't matter if they can't ship. Ours do. I’ve seen too many junior devs burn out after their 12th tutorial in a row. Here's something that works better: 1️⃣ Do the tutorial once 2️⃣ Rebuild it without looking 3️⃣ Change it. Make it weird. Break it. Fix it. That’s where learning happens. The engineers I’ve mentored who leveled up fastest weren’t the ones who had the most certificates. They were the ones who got stuck, debugged the issue, and took the time to understand what broke.
