The UK's Data Use and Access Bill has passed through the Upper House and will not include the long fought for protections for creators that Baroness Beeban Kidron and her supporters had hoped. Caught up on some Streaming Media Connect sessions this week and the “In AI We Trust?” panel was a personal highlight... Especially the contrarian view from Manny Ahmed about the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) being fundamentally flawed. As a metadata-based standard, C2PA works fine in controlled environments, such as a TV studio or a trusted newswire. But once content enters the open internet, metadata becomes a liability, and if your authenticity model collapses the second someone re-uploads a file, then your standard is only good for academic demos. The EU’s attempts to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) risk stifling innovation in Europe, a senior figure from AI company Anthropic has warned. Guillaume Princen said while regulation was required to ensure the safety of businesses and users, the EU legislation risked going “too far down the road”. Are search engines fundamentally different from AI answer engines? That distinction will be clarified soon through new web standards being drawn up at the IETF by tech giants and content owners such as Google, Cloudflare, OpenAI, Microsoft, Condé Nast, and Elsevier. These new standards will decide the web’s future. For 25 years, search engines crawled → ranked → sent you to sources, funding content with traffic. AI answer engines scrape the same material for free but keep users on their page, collapsing referrals and destroying the economics of web content. The IETF is debating standards to separate “Search” (links you out) from “AI use” (answers/training). If that carve-out holds, sites could allow search bots while blocking AI bots. Choose wisely: links sustain open commons; answers risk replacing it.
