The future of work in healthcare is being shaped by far more than AI alone. Demographic shifts, generational leadership transitions, tighter STEM pipelines, and an aging population are all converging at once. Taken together, they invite us to look toward something bigger: how we thoughtfully design work for the people doing it. Many of the systems we rely on today were built for a different moment. As the landscape changes, this feels like an opportunity—not a critique—to rethink roles, collaboration, and how we support one another through constant change. None of us can solve this alone. BY learning together and redesigning work with intention, healthcare has a chance to build a workforce that’s ready for what’s ahead and grounded in why we do this work in the first place.

83% of digital health technologies measure user satisfaction, yet only 7% actually assess how learnable they are. This striking disconnect emerged from recent research by Katerina D. Tzimourta (Cureus, 2025) examining human-centered design across digital health implementations, and it reveals why so many digital transformations in healthcare struggle to deliver on their promise. Since starting SparrowHub I've witnessed this pattern repeatedly. Organisations invest heavily in cutting-edge technology but overlook the fundamental human factors that determine success. Tzimourta's research shows that 'Iterative Co-Design', that is, Technologies developed WITH users, not FOR them, showed significantly higher adoption rates. This means pharmacists, nurses, and patients actively shaping the solution, not just being consulted at the end. For pharmacy and health-tech leaders, this isn't just about user experience, it's about ROI: • Reduced implementation failures • Decreased training costs through intuitive design • Higher staff retention by reducing technology-induced burnout • Improved patient safety through better human-technology collaboration Based on this research and our experience implementing mixed-methods research at SparrowHub, here's what works: 1. Start with ethnographic observation: watch how work actually happens 2. Prototype with real constraints: test during peak pharmacy hours 3. Measure what matters: track learnability and long-term efficiency, not just satisfaction 4. Build in adaptation: technologies should learn from users, not the reverse The evidence is clear: human-centered design isn't a nice-to-have in digital health, it's the difference between transformation and expensive failure.
