Sedbergh School: A Boarding Life
A new book about the history of Sedbergh School that has been written by two boys from Sedgwick House. A new book about the history of Sedbergh School that has been written by two boys from Sedgwick House. In October 2008 Ben King and George Head began an Oral History project to capture the memories of Old Sedberghians and former Staff. The original aim was to produce a collection of recordings and transcriptions to donate to the school archive, however the project proved so successful that the boys were moved to produce a book. After numerous redrafts the boys are now the proud authors of Sedbergh School's latest book.
Ben and George spent nearly a year interviewing a wide variety of people connected with the school. Having learnt how to use specialist recording equipment the boys conducted interviews both in school and in the homes of the contributors. They particularly enjoyed the hospitality of several former housemaster's wives who proved good at baking! Both boys have an interest in History with George and Ben hoping to study History and Classics respectively. It is very possible that what started as a voluntary project will become a career for the boys.
"Having learnt about so many intricate details of boarding life at Sedbergh, we felt that others would enjoy reading about them too." Says Ben King
The last nine months have been spent pulling out the interesting details from the endless interview transcriptions to make the final manuscript. The book is divided into themed chapters in which the interviewees talk about some of the fundamental aspects of Sedbergh life from food and sport to the house system and the introduction of girls. With the earliest anecdotes describing life at Sedbergh School in the thirties the reader is able to chart the changing attitudes and conventions in the school through the memories of those who experienced them first hand.
