I've been quiet on LinkedIn this year because I've been working on two very big and important projects. The first is my "commuter blanket". I spend a lot of time on trains to get to the office, so I'll crochet a couple of squares every week and stitch them together in my breaks at home. This is the largest thing I've ever worked on and I'm a decent way through it! The second is a huge overhaul in the Vouchsafe app. We are leading the way on secure and inclusive verification methods, and we've tuned up our architecture to reflect that. This is honestly some of the greatest work of my life and I cannot wait for it to launch in the near future. 💖

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill has passed yesterday. For the first time in history, we're creating two levels of allowances for adults in the UK. Those who can legally buy cigarettes, and those who never will be able to, regardless of their age. A 30 year old in 2040 will still not be able to walk into a shop and buy a pack of cigarettes, and that's not been done before. They will be able to buy vapes, but not anything tobacco based. The policy intent is clear. But the implementation question is genuinely hard. Retailers, from supermarkets to corner shops to online platforms, now need to verify not just that someone is over 18, but specifically whether they were born before 1 January 2009, and we've got less than a year to implement this. We're always thinking about what these changes means, and what it takes to build verification that's accurate, inclusive, and actually works at scale. For Vouchsafe, we've built the platform with eligibility considerations built in, so that extra step isn't hard work for us to verify. It's not just about someone is a certain age, it's more than that. I'm also curious about what the social impact will be. Obviously, smoking is terrible for you, and this will literally save countless lives. But, as someone who has smoked a cigarette or two from a packet with a warning reading "Fumar mata", I can't help but think that the youth will find a way around. But hey, anything to stop younger generations from ending up with an embarrassing snap like this.

Three observations regarding the Lovable "data breach": (Unclear to me if this deserves to be defined as a data breach, it's probably subjective, but I'm gonna join a few dots here) First observation: Whether this is technically a data breach or not, it is a massive security flaw. Your docs are part of your product. If it's not clear that "public" means people might stumble upon your app, your source code, and your conversation history, you've thoroughly failed. Second observation: We are all far too trusting of security through obscurity. As someone who's assumed no one will actually find my "Anyone with the link" Google Doc unless I send it to them, I too am historically guilty of this. Third observation: Lovable were, until a year ago, trusting the disgraced compliance-as-a-service Delve with their security certification, before moving to Vanta. Maybe a more proactive partner would have caught this earlier?

With the new generational tobacco ban, we move one step closer to the wonderful world of the Fifth Element where all the cigs are mostly filter. One more age assurance use case to add to the list, but this one is particularly important because it means retailers are going to have to care about your date of birth *forever*, not just when you're around 18. An interesting new challenge for facial age estimation especially. The future is stupid, but the compliance burden is real.

2026 is the year digital ID goes mainstream. Every EU member state is mandated to offer a digital ID and wallet to their citizens by the end of the year, and a number have now been unveiled.
