“Underwriting discipline is a non-negotiable” noted Chris Killourhy, MD, QBE Re at the recent Intelligent Insurer Reinsurance Outlook event. “Underwriting discipline is non negotiable” affirmed Kera McDonald, CUO, Swiss Re. Yet even within the same event we heard concerns raised. “We were disappointed with the inconsistency …. it was “discipline, discipline” and then crash in the last week of the year” said Jose Lopez Gonzalez., Head of Ceded Re at Mapfre Re whilst Pasquale Taddeo from Aon noted that the underwriting teams “that could adapt during Renewals won”. On appetite as well as price. Are data and tools going to rescue you? From what we have seen and heard in our research, not necessarily. The graph shows how one insurer saw technical price adequacy flatten out at 100% whilst underlying rates continued to fall during the last soft market. Underwriters sharpen the pencil. Focusing on such behaviour is key to successfully navigating softening markets. Here are three behavioural warning signs that re/insurers are not "walking the talk" on discipline: 1) Disciplined underwriters are asked to become more commercial. In some cases, they are explicitly asked to re-think their principles or even "consider their position" 2) Organisations "simplify" their processes, for example by removing referrals or "grandfathering" historic ULRs for renewal business 3) Data is used selectively to "justify" underwriting decisions rather than drive underwriting decisions Are you seeing the similar?
