Insight from this morning's Outserve's roadshow: AI, Apps and Automation: North West Edition. So much to share from this bespoke event for product businesses. Let's start with a brilliant founder panel led by Phil Peters, featuring Shadia Al Hili, Shezad Aslam and Zee Ahmed. The discussion focused on a simple question: Why is Manchester such a strong place to build a product business? The answer from the panel was clear. For founders 'up north' the opportunity is real. Lower costs. Easier access to warehousing. More affordable homes. Less congestion. Strong local talent. Better ease of movement. And compared with ten years ago, far fewer reasons to feel you need to be in London to build a serious brand. The North also puts product businesses close to major retail and commercial ecosystems, with names like Morrisons, Asda and Booths all part of the wider northern story. But what made the session especially valuable was the honesty. When asked about costly mistakes, every founder had plenty to chose from. For Shezad, it was over-ordering after strong COVID-era demand and ending up with £50k of marinade stock that did not move as expected. His advice was simple: sell first. Test the concept, use imagery and mock-ups, even AI-generated visuals, and prove demand before tying up cash in stock. For Zee, it was a smaller but very familiar founder mistake: ordering £3k of stock that never shifted, with much of it sitting in his old bedroom at his parents’ house. A reminder that in product businesses, unsold stock quickly becomes trapped cash. And for Shadia, the lesson was even sharper. Reflecting on a Boots contract across 28 stores, she spoke about the danger of over-forecasting chilled products. With 15 out of 20 pallets not selling as planned! Her standout advice, “Knowing your numbers is not enough. You need to know someone who knows what to do with your numbers.” Cash flow is often the hat founders underestimate most. Shadia’s advice was to stop trying to wear every hat and bring in support earlier, especially financial support. A fractional CFO helped her business uncover CUZENA 🐫 had just 16 weeks of runway left. Invaluable. The panel closed with equally practical advice: From Shezad: Do not be afraid to go premium if the product supports it. Protect margin so you can afford to market and grow. And Shadia reiterated: Admit to inexperience. Plug in expert support earlier. It saves time, money and stress. And ultimately gives your more time with family. Great session.
