Thank you, Matilda Dorotic, this is a critical discussion. Law enforcement is using AI, will do so in the future and they should! This is inevitable. The real question is whether it is deployed in a way that is operationally effective and aligned with human rights and the rule of law. This is not only a normative issue, but a practical one. Without transparency, accountability, and clear safeguards, there will be public backlash and ultimately a loss of trust that will undermine the very effectiveness these systems are meant to deliver. Looking forward to the discussion.

How can #AI enhance public safety without compromising trust, privacy, and human rights? Public attitudes towards AI in policing remain cautious, and trust in law enforcement agencies can strongly influence whether they agree to new technologies. It is up to law enforcement agencies to act effectively and, above all, fairly when making decisions about whether, when and how to adopt and implement AI systems. The Head of UNICRI Centre for AI and Robotics at the United Nations, Irakli Beridze, will explore this topic – examining how AI systems can support law enforcement while putting transparency, accountability, and human rights at the heart of innovation in policing. Volha (Olga) Pashkevich from UNICRI will present the results of their research on how transparency – through clear, open communication about AI systems and meaningful public engagement – can help agencies to earn and sustain public confidence while implementing AI responsibly and in human rights‑respecting way. To hear more, join us this upcoming Thursday, April 23 from 13:00 at BI Norwegian Business School: https://lnkd.in/efvmhafM Irakli Beridze, Volha (Olga) Pashkevich, Bente Skattør, Lasse Øverlier, Inês Gonçalves Ferreira, BI Norwegian Business School

🇺🇳 Advancing accountability to deliver justice: the work of the International Criminal Court Office of the Prosecutor. Amid growing global challenges, justice and accountability remain central to a rules-based international order. In this video, we speak with Nazhat Shameem Khan, Deputy Prosecutor, about the work of the International Criminal Court. She outlines how the Office of the Prosecutor operates across multiple jurisdictions worldwide, highlighting the complexity, scope, and guiding principles of its work. The Court is mandated to try individuals for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. Key highlights ⚖️ Investigations are conducted across nearly all regions, stemming from Court authorisations, State referrals, and United Nations Security Council resolutions ⚖️ Field investigations and work at headquarters require sustained resources and coordination ⚖️ The principle of non-selectivity is central to maintaining the Court’s credibility and long-term effectiveness ⚖️ Policy frameworks guide action across all cases, including those related to gender-based violence, children, environmental crimes in armed conflict, and cybercrime ⚖️ Ongoing situations include Afghanistan, Bangladesh/Myanmar (Rohingya deportation), multiple African contexts, Ukraine, and Palestine ⚖️ Dedicated teams work continuously to deliver results as efficiently as possible 🌐 ️ Her words underscore the importance of consistency, legal rigour, and policy-driven approaches in advancing justice and accountability and strengthening international justice. Despite weakening international cooperation, the Court’s role remains crucial: ensuring justice for victims, securing accountability, and helping deter the gravest crimes under its jurisdiction. ▶️ About the ICC: https://www.icc-cpi.int/ University for Peace (UPEACE) - UN Mandated #JusticeMatters I #MoreJustWorld #Goal16

Around the world – and starkly in the Middle East – respect for international law is being trampled. Rules governing the use of force and the conduct of hostilities are ignored. Civilians are exposed to intolerable harm. Humanitarian obligations are disregarded. Even the protections afforded to the United Nations and our personnel are violated. International law applies to all States, without exception. Respect for its rules is not optional. Without it, instability spreads, mistrust deepens, and conflicts spiral out of control. This is not the moment to retreat from international law. It is the moment to reaffirm it.
