In July 2026, something will change that at first glance looks like just another regulation... but in practice could shift the entire economics of express transport in Europe. 👉 So far, light commercial vehicles in international transport have operated much more flexibly than trucks. 👉 From July 2026 - that ends. Van = new rules: • mandatory 2nd generation smart tachographs • registration of driving and rest times Sound administrative? That's only half the story. The real change is economic. Mandatory breaks mean one thing - fewer kilometers possible in the same time. And the costs? • leasing - unchanged • insurance - unchanged • driver salaries - unchanged The result - the same costs spread over fewer kilometers. Express transport ceases to be a "cheaper alternative" - it becomes structurally more expensive. And not because carriers want to earn more. Just because vehicle utilization is declining. From July 2026, the van transport industry is set to undergo significant changes 🚨 Vehicles with a GVW of 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes will be required to have tachographs installed. What does this mean in practice? 🚛 75% of carriers expect an increase in cost per km ⏱ Transit times on key international routes will increase 📉 Availability of spot vehicles will decrease, especially for urgent shipments Freight forwarders who delay adapting may find themselves in a difficult position - access to compliant vans at critical moments will be limited. Even with well-managed contracts, urgent transports during peak periods will require reliable and readily available vehicles - and these will simply be in short supply.
