To be presented by Berggruen Gallery at TEFAF New York this May, Cecily Brown’s "Functor Hideaway" exemplifies the artist’s celebrated fusion of gestural abstraction with suggestive figuration. In this work, Brown emphasizes ambiguity over narrative, using vigorous sweeps of color to shape forms that hint at the human body without fully resolving into it. Mesmerizing and immersive, her choreography of painterly gestures engulfs the viewer in a phantasmagorical realm, akin to a woodland pathway through frenzied woods. Here, Brown breaks free from traditional narrative conventions, blending centuries of artistic styles and techniques to forge her own distinctive voice. Together with Bank of America, TEFAF is pleased to announce that the Minneapolis Institute of Art is the recipient of this year’s TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund (TMRF) in New York. Joint support from TMRF and the Bank of America Art Conservation Project will enable the conservation of "The Meeting of Dante and Virgil", a monumental 16th-century Italian tapestry of exceptional rarity and importance. Produced in a Florentine workshop, the tapestry was designed by Francesco Salviati between 1546–1548 and woven shortly after during the formative years of Medici tapestry production. Standing over five meters high (over 17 feet), it is considered one of the most significant Italian Renaissance tapestries in the United States and a remarkable example of early Medicean production. Following restoration, "The Meeting of Dante and Virgil" will return to public view for the first time since 1959, from July 2026. Among the works coming to TEFAF New York, May 15–19, "Sunset Birth" by Ithell Colquhoun and presented by Richard Saltoun Gallery reflects the artist’s deeply personal engagement with landscape, mythology, and spiritual symbolism. Created following her move to Cornwall in the late 1940s, the work draws on the forms of the ancient Mên-an-Tol stones, long associated with local healing and fertility traditions. In "Sunset Birth", these references dissolve into an ethereal composition, where the suggestion of a human presence lingers within glowing forms and fluid currents. Explore exceptional works of art coming to TEFAF New York, May 15–19, where exhibitor Galerie Lelong will present a monumental sculpture by French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet. Renowned not only for his work but also as the “inventor” of a form of art he named "Art Brut", this piece is an important example of his late-career turn to monumental sculpture. "Le Commodore" is one of many pieces from the artist’s L’Hourloupe Cycle, created between the early 1960s and 1974, during which Dubuffet revisited and reworked the figures that had shaped his earlier art. The piece echoes his paintings and drawings from the 1940s and 50s, whose simplicity conveys his rejection of academic art and conventional artistic traditions. Although his work initially faced strong criticism, it gradually came to be recognized as one of the most significant bodies of work of the 20th century.
