As we strive to become a more Lean plant, driving improvements in energy efficiency and waste reduction, training is critical. We recently had several employees complete Lean 101 through Mississippi State University CAVS Extension, a hands-on training program focused on Lean Manufacturing principles. Lean 101 introduces teams to core concepts such as waste elimination, continuous improvement (kaizen), and streamlining shop-floor processes to get more value out of every hour and every dollar spent. The hands-on format made it practical from day one. Our team came back with real tools to improve shop flow, reduce energy use, and cut unnecessary costs across our operation. This is just the beginning. We plan to send more employees through Lean 101 in the coming months as we build a culture of continuous improvement across the plant. If your operation has explored Lean training, we would love to hear what worked for your team. #LeanManufacturing #ContinuousImprovement #Kaizen #WorkforceDevelopment #MSUExtension #LumberIndustry #ManufacturingExcellence jeff fortenberry, Emily Barrilleaux, Montrell Marshall, Taylor P. 🌲 Big news for the domestic lumber industry this week. The USDA just announced $115.2 million in loan guarantees through the Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program (TPEP), aimed at ensuring sawmills and wood processing facilities have the funding to establish, reopen, expand, or improve their operations across eight states. This comes at a pivotal moment for the industry. U.S. softwood lumber imports hit their lowest annual level since 2014 last year, as higher duties pushed Canadian imports to a combined 45% duty rate. Meanwhile, the Hardwood Federation estimates that at least one sawmill is going out of business every week, with the NHLA reporting that more than 4% of U.S. sawmills have closed or been consolidated. But there are real signs of resilience. U.S. lumber prices have rebounded past $600 as supply tightens and construction picks up — and this federal investment is part of a broader commitment to expand American timber production by 25% and support nearly 500 jobs across the country. At Stringer, we're closely monitoring these market shifts. A stronger domestic supply chain means more stability and opportunity for everyone in the wood products space — and that's something worth building on.
