London's largest studios provider, supporting artists and building creative communities since 1968

About us

SPACE is London's oldest and largest artist studios provider, supporting 800+ artists in 21 studio buildings across 8 London boroughs and Colchester. We support professional visual artists and creatives in a number of ways: by providing affordable spaces in which to work; offering professional development training; facilitating collaborations between artists and the communities living near our studio sites; and through advocating for the sector as whole. Founded in 1968 by Bridget Riley and Peter Sedgley, SPACE's core mission is to enable professional artists to remain creating and working in London. We aim to increase the diversity of creative practitioners and to ensure that they are fully valued at the heart of society.

  • Join us for a free evening of live gaming and live music performances in the gallery. Imagine taking a gaming session out of a dim-lit bedroom and into the middle of an art exhibition with an added live soundtrack produced by an instrument made out of PC liquid cooling tubes. For Hiddenware, artist Robert Cervera has been working with local gamers and musicians to create audiovisual performances where the music reacts in real time to what’s happening on screen. Drop in for the whole session or join us at any point, or follow it live on Twitch and YouTube (HIDDENWARElive). You can expect complimentary refreshments and the chance to mingle with fellow gamers, tech enthusiasts, and the artists and musicians themselves before and after the performances. Schedule: 4-4.30: Refreshments served 4.30 - 6.30: Live gaming and music performance * 6.30 - 7: Performance continues with a chance for further networking and mingling before the event ends. *Please note that this is an informal, gaming social event so there will be ample opportunity to network and mingle during the gaming and music performance.  📍 SPACE Ilford  🗓️ Saturday, 31st of January  🎟️ Free, all welcome Link to RSVP:  https://lnkd.in/euUfPPMD Musicians: Anna Carter, Barnaby Slade, Cat Eden, Hanna Mbuya, Nicholas Hann, Robert Cervera Gamers: Elliott Horton-Stephens, Kabilan Thesingarajah, Luis Bull AV support: Samuel Carter Technician: Ellis James Lee Lighting design: Rupert Barth von Wehrenalp Graphic design: Studio Bergini Hiddenware exhibition launch at SPACE, Ilford. SPACE, along with all the other members of LAASN (LONDON'S AFFORDABLE ARTISTS STUDIO NETWORK), have written to the Mayor’s Office in response to the New London Plan Consultation calling for the prioritisation of Affordable Artists Studios in London’s Future. LAASN observe a lack of specific focus on artists’ studios a distinct and critical part of London’s creative and cultural ecosystem that risks being lost without clear policy protection, planning mechanisms and funding. 1. Artists’ studios are NOT the same as Creative or Cultural Workspaces. Artists typically are self-employed, earn lower than average incomes and regularly require process based space. LAASN urge the GLA to distinguish clearly between not for profit artists studios and commercial creative workspace. 2. Affordability must be Defined - Not Estimated. % below market rate approach is unsatisfactory and open to manipulation. The Herbert Affordability Formula (HAF) sets out what is actually affordable for artists and ask the GLA to apply its use in policy in collaboration with artists and studio providers. 3. Health and Wellbeing. Studio sites create participation and connection, functioning as incubators for life long learning and inter generational friendship. LAASN call for Health Impact Assessments on larger sites. Finally - A Call for Inclusion. Just as London needs affordable homes and green spaces for its communities, it also needs to protect spaces where art is made. Artist studios are the power house behind the large cultural institutions. Without intervention we face a loss of artists from our city. LAASN have deep knowledge around S106 and CEZ’s and have recommendations to share with the GLA. LAASN represents 1,200,000 sq ft of genuinely affordable workspace in London, 1 in 3 artists and we ask for inclusion in writing the London Plan. Full letter on the LAASN website > https://lnkd.in/eG96fKkS SET, Second Floor Studios, ASC Studios, APT Studios, Tannery Arts, Art Hub London, arebyte, Procreate ProjectThe Koppel Project
