Two years. One world first. Yesterday, the world's first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) received authorization under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement — and Sherpas structured it. Nearly two years ago, we started working shoulder to shoulder with Colbún to build the carbon credit framework behind this project. There was no precedent, no existing methodology for BESS under Article 6, and no blueprint for Chile's National Electric System. So we created one — a tailor-made methodology designed from scratch for the Chilean grid. The project: 228 MW of utility-scale lithium-ion batteries in the Atacama Region. During the day, it captures excess solar generation that would otherwise be curtailed. At night, it dispatches clean electricity during peak demand — displacing fossil fuels and strengthening the flexibility of Chile's grid as it phases out coal. Carbon revenues from KliK Foundation are what make the project financially viable. This is carbon finance doing exactly what it's meant to do: enabling critical technologies during their early adoption phase, when markets alone won't fund them. To the entire team at Colbún, Ministerio del Medio Ambiente, Ministerio de Energía Chile, KliK Foundation, and Federal Office for the Environment FOEN — thank you for two years of trust, rigor, and shared ambition. This milestone belongs to all of us. • KliK Foundation flew to Chile for a reason. Here's what that signals for Article 6. This morning, we gathered at the residence of the Swiss Ambassador to Chile for a conversation about what ten years of bilateral climate cooperation actually looks like in practice. The KliK Foundation's board traveled to Chile to celebrate five projects that have already received official authorization under the Chile–Switzerland bilateral agreement on Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, and to connect with the teams behind those still moving through the pipeline. The presence of Chile's new Undersecretary of the Environment reaffirmed what those of us in this space already know: this is not a new relationship, it has been taking shape for over a decade, and it is only gaining momentum. What this kind of event makes visible is the infrastructure behind the market: the institutional trust, the policy continuity, and the long-term commitment from both governments that make high-integrity carbon credit transactions possible. That foundation doesn't get built in a day, and it doesn't run on goodwill alone, it runs on consistent, rigorous work from everyone in the room. We are proud to be part of that work, and grateful for the opportunity to keep contributing to it alongside the KliK Foundation and Chile's Ministry of Environment. #Article6 #CarbonMarkets #ITMOs #ChileSwitzerland #KliKFoundation #ParisAgreement #ClimateFinance #CarbonCredits #Sherpas Ministerio del Medio Ambiente Ministerio de Energía Chile KliK Foundation Embajada de Suiza en Chile

  • Connecting the dots between Carbon Finance and Battery Storage (BESS) 🔋⚡ We are incredibly proud to celebrate a major victory for the carbon markets. The Ministerio del Medio Ambiente has officially authorized the Diego de Almagro Sur Battery Energy Storage System (BESS DAS) project under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. Led by Colbun S.A, this project leverages carbon finance to: ✅ Accelerate investment in critical infrastructure. ✅ Capture daytime solar surplus (tackling the curtailment challenge). ✅ Inject flexibility and resilience into the Chilean electrical system. ✅ Supply clean energy when the grid needs it most. Successes of this magnitude are built on robust institutional frameworks. We extend our sincere gratitude to the authorities for their leadership and rigor in establishing these mechanisms: 🏛️ Ministerio del Medio Ambiente and Ministerio de Energía Chile in Chile. 🇨🇭 Federal Office for the Environment FOEN in Switzerland. We also want to thank the entire team at Colbun S.A for their trust in Sherpas throughout this rigorous process. This achievement is the result of over a year of hard work and technical precision alongside our partners at EBP and the KliK Foundation. At Sherpas, we see the authorization of "DAS BESS" as more than just a project; it is a clear testament to the power of public-private collaboration. It demonstrates that when policy, technology, and high-integrity ITMOs align, we can unlock the next level of global decarbonization. Congratulations to everyone involved! The path to implementation is open. #Article6 #BESS #EnergyStorage #Renewables #Chile #CarbonMarkets #ITMOs #PublicPrivatePartnership #EnergyTransition #Sherpas #ClimateFinance #Decarbonization

  • Monetizing carbon credits: enabling storage and supporting PPAs. Last Wednesday, ACERA AG. - Asociación Chilena de Energías Renovables y Almacenamiento hosted a new edition of its Desayunos para Socios (Members’ Breakfasts) focused on a pressing question: How can we strengthen the viability of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in today’s market? This exclusive session examined the monetization of carbon credits as a tool to generate additional revenue and support power purchase agreements (PPAs). During the discussion, Gonzalo Díaz Pearcy, our Managing Director and founder, opened by presenting the opportunity of the programme we are developing and explained how monetizing carbon credits can unlock additional revenue streams and strengthen the business case for BESS. He illustrated how these mechanisms can bolster revenue and mitigate risk, showing that storage projects can become more viable when carbon credits are integrated into their financial models. Following Gonzalo’s presentation, Jorge Cruz Villalobos, our Business Development Associate, outlined the opportunities that Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and the Chile–Switzerland bilateral agreement offer for carbon credit projects. Article 6.2 establishes a framework for countries to cooperate internationally by authorising the transfer of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), enabling more cost‑effective global mitigation efforts and helping nations meet their Nationally Determined Contributions. The breakfast is part of a member‑exclusive cycle designed to promote high‑level technical exchange and applied learning among those driving the energy transition. We were joined by representatives from AES Andes, Atlas Renewable Energy, AustriaEnergy, Celeo Chile, CVE (Changing Visions of Energy), ENGIE Chile, Grenergy, LiBR3 - Lithium Battery Reuse, Recycling and Reduction, CircularTec, Nala Renewables, Zelestra and others, reflecting the broad collaboration needed to advance storage solutions. Thanks to everyone who participated. For more about carbon credits, please visit: https://bit.ly/3ZmVfEM

  • Celebrating 2025 by living up to our name — climbing Cerro La Campana with the Sherpas crew. As we concluded 2025 with an adventure in the Cerro La Campana of Olmué, our team — now twice as large as last year — lived up to its name. Like Sherpas, we challenged ourselves to climb higher together and appreciate the landscape we work to protect. Throughout 2025, we had the privilege of collaborating with exceptional partners who share our vision for a sustainable future. Your trust and commitment were our energy for advancing climate action and developing robust carbon credit solutions. From the summit of La Campana, with panoramic views that reminded us of what we’re working to preserve, we look forward to continuing our journey together in this new year, expanding opportunities and fostering international collaboration for meaningful climate impact. May your season 2026 be as invigorating as a mountain hike, and may the new year bring renewed energy for our shared mission toward a sustainable future. Thank you for being part of our climb. With warmest regards, Sherpas 🌍✨

Our Business Development Associate shares what carbon credits are in a Mundo Sostenible interview Last week, MS Mundo Sostenible visited the Sungrow Summit Latam 2025 and discovered the new Power Titan 3.0 energy storage technology from Sungrow LATAM. During the event, Mundo Sostenible interviewed our Business Development Associate, Jorge Cruz Villalobos, to explore the basics of carbon credits and why they matter. Jorge explained what a carbon credit represents and that these certificates can be sold or transferred in carbon markets to compensate for emissions and finance new reduction initiatives. To issue credits, a project must define its scope and baseline, select a recognised mechanism, and demonstrate social and environmental integrity. He highlighted practical examples: renewable energy projects that replace fossil fuels, such as storage systems that enable more solar and wind power injections, forest restoration, and waste management projects. Each initiative must prove that the reductions would not occur without the project and that the benefits will endure. At Sherpas, our mission is to support companies in developing high‑integrity projects and seizing opportunities in carbon markets. #Article6 #ITMOs #Carbonmarkets #carboncredits

How Chile’s Article 6 regulation will unlock international carbon finance (Link to regulation in the comments) Chile’s Ministerio del Medio Ambiente has approved the regulation setting conditions for emission reduction and removal certificates under the Article 6 cooperation mechanisms of the Paris Agreement. The new rules support Chile’s 2050 carbon‑neutrality goal and provide a clear legal framework for domestic and international carbon markets. The regulation outlines a simple process: a mitigation activity – such as a battery‑energy‑storage project or other climate initiative – is implemented, its results are measured and verified by independent auditors, and the certified reductions can then be used domestically to meet Chile’s nationally determined contribution (#NDC) or transferred internationally as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (#ITMOs), linking local action with global carbon finance. To guarantee integrity, all outcomes must be real, additional, measurable, verified, and permanent—only genuine, non‑reversible reductions qualify. The decree also bans double-counting by preventing double issuance, double claims, and double use of certificates, and it creates a public national registry to track authorised entities, methodologies, projects, and verified results. Together, these measures position Chile at the forefront of climate policy, enabling high‑integrity carbon projects and ensuring that each tonne of avoided or removed CO₂ counts only once. See the attached infographic for a simplified overview of the mechanism and prepare for a more transparent, accountable carbon market.
