Science Based Targets initiative

Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.
About us
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Earlier this week, SBTi CEO David Kennedy delivered the keynote address at the Opening Plenary of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Annual Meeting in Montreux, Switzerland. Across the plenary and subsequent discussions, one theme came through clearly: companies are looking for climate frameworks that combine ambition with practicality—and that stand up to real-world complexity. Encouragingly, there’s a shift underway: climate action is no longer framed as a standalone sustainability effort, but increasingly embedded into core business strategy—valued by CEOs, CFOs and boards for its role in managing risk and driving long-term performance. Conversations focused on what it takes to move from targets to delivery, and how the SBTi is evolving to reflect this shift. This includes providing clearer pathways for companies to act, grounded in credible data and supported by strong guardrails that help track and deliver progress. There was also strong resonance around the idea that progress is not always linear. What matters is that companies act in good faith, are transparent about challenges, and are accountable for course correction along the way. Partnership remains central to making this work at scale. On stage, David was joined by Tim Mohin, newly appointed CEO of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), and Stephanie de Heer, Chief Member & Marketing Officer at WBCSD, reinforcing the importance of a connected ecosystem and continued collaboration to support companies across their net-zero journey. The direction is clear: supporting companies not just to set targets, but to deliver them—through practical, science-based frameworks that reflect how business actually operates. Our thanks to WBCSD for convening such an important and timely discussion. #WBCSDAnnualMeeting26 #ScienceBasedTargets #ClimateAction #NetZero

Asia is emerging as a center of gravity for corporate climate target-setting, with growth now occurring at a scale comparable to Europe, according to our latest Trend Tracker: - The region saw a 53% increase in companies setting science-based targets over the past 12 months. - 1,216 new companies adopted validated targets in 2025—closely matching Europe’s increase of 1,209. - Growth was driven by major economies such as China, Japan, and India. Strong uptake was seen in low penetration markets including Indonesia, Pakistan, Singapore, and Thailand. Asia’s role in shaping corporate climate ambition is becoming more pronounced, with data indicating that climate target-setting is not only deepening in established markets, but also spreading across the region. This week SBTi will be at the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Annual Meeting in Montreux, Switzerland—joining global sustainability leaders at a pivotal moment for corporate climate action. Tomorrow, our CEO David Kennedy, will deliver a keynote address in the Opening Plenary on the SBTi’s evolving role as the focus shifts from target-setting to implementation. He will also host a follow-up breakfast session on 29 April, building on the themes and insights shared in the plenary, and join a panel discussion on strengthening the net-zero standards ecosystem. Over the past decade, science-based targets have evolved from a new idea to a business imperative, with more than 10,000 companies now taking action. Today, the challenge is no longer whether to act, but how to deliver real-world transformation at the pace and scale required. This year’s Annual Meeting is an important space for tackling that challenge—bringing together business leaders, practitioners, and standard-setters to align boardroom priorities with practical implementation. As expectations rise and transition risks sharpen, the emphasis is firmly on turning commitments into results. Collaboration across the system has never been more important. We look forward to contributing to these discussions and engaging with partners on what comes next. To mark Earth Day and this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, we’ve been reflecting on what collective action really looks like in practice. Across communities, sectors and regions, progress is being driven by people and organizations taking responsibility for change—finding solutions, working together, and accelerating the shift to a more sustainable, resilient economy. Businesses have a critical role to play in that transition. Increasingly, companies are moving beyond ambition alone—embedding climate goals into business strategy, operations and everyday decision-making. Science-based targets help turn that intent into action. They provide a clear, credible framework for companies to align with climate science, while building long-term resilience. What’s encouraging is the momentum. More companies are not just setting targets, but taking measurable steps to reduce emissions—and being more transparent about progress along the way. At a time when expectations are rising, accountability matters. Supporting companies with practical guidance and tools is key to turning ambition into real-world impact. Earth Day reminds us that lasting progress comes from the actions we take together. #EarthDay #OurPowerOurPlanet #ClimateAction #ScienceBasedTargets

Our recently published Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) Science-Based Target-Setting Guidance Version 1.2 strengthens clarity and consistency for companies setting FLAG science-based targets, making ambitious climate action more accessible and actionable. For companies operating in land-intensive value chains, integrating land-sector decarbonization into core business strategy is increasingly business critical. By setting FLAG science-based targets and defining appropriate decarbonization strategies, companies can help stabilize the climate, preserve the land on which their businesses depend, and capture the many benefits of target setting. Interested in learning more? Explore below the updated SBTi FLAG Guidance in Brief, which provides an introduction to the updated guidance and key steps to get started in the target-setting process. #FLAG #SBTi #ScienceBasedTargets #ForestLandandAgriculture

New data from our latest Trend Tracker shows that corporate climate action is becoming increasingly global in scale. What was once concentrated in a few leading markets is now expanding rapidly across regions and territories, with new centers of momentum emerging. By region: - Asia was fastest-growing region (+53%), now expanding at a scale comparable to Europe. - Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean recorded the next highest proportional growth, increasing by 48% and 42% respectively. - Europe continues to lead in absolute terms, accounting for the highest number of companies with targets overall, at 49%. - Asia followed closely at 36%, and then North America at 11%. By territory: - Japan continued to lead in the total number of companies with validated targets, with 2,091 at the end of 2025, followed by the United Kingdom (1,363). - Among territories with high penetration, China, the Netherlands, and Taiwan, Province of China, recorded the highest levels of growth. - Among territories with low penetration, Indonesia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Mexico all achieved significant growth. Together, these trends highlight a clear shift: climate target-setting is no longer led by a handful of regions, but is becoming embedded across diverse markets worldwide.
