The Rust Foundation recently announced the Rust Foundation Maintainer Fund—a new initiative to support the people who keep Rust reliable, secure, and evolving. One of the questions we’ve been working through is deceptively simple: Who is a maintainer, and what does maintenance actually mean? In the Rust Project, maintainers: - Keep critical systems running day after day - Triage issues, fix regressions, handle CI failures, and respond to security incidents - Review pull requests and mentor contributors - Perform complex refactorings that make future improvements possible Much of this work is invisible when it’s done well and results in a stable, quietly reliable system. But that reliability is the product of constant, highly skilled effort. We see open source maintenance work as having a multiplicative effect on Rust. By unblocking contributors, maintainers accelerate innovation across the entire ecosystem. That’s why the Rust Foundation Maintainer Fund exists—to provide stability, recognition, and long-term sustainability for the people who make Rust possible.
