Over the last month, we’ve defined the key terms shaping AI in public transit, from AI itself to APIs. Next stop: we’ll dive into how these technologies are already improving planning, scheduling, efficiency and equity in transit systems around the world. Which topic should we explore first? Agents in dispatch? Predictive planning? Route optimization? The history of AI in public transit?

As 2025 wraps, we wanted to share some of the stories that inspired all of us at Via this year 🩵 Excited to carry this spirit into 2026!

Exciting news! We just announced the acquisition of Downtowner, a transportation technology company specializing in innovative and efficient public transit solutions for Destination Cities. This acquisition expands Via’s best-in-class public transit platform with a solution designed and honed over more than a decade to address a key segment of the transit market. Downtowner has developed a sophisticated flexible, software-powered transit solution that has been adopted by many of the most iconic Destination Cities across the US, including Aspen, CO, Park City, UT, and Truckee, CA. In today’s bonus edition of our AI glossary we’re covering APIs. APIs are all around us and you might not even have noticed that they exist! 🌐 An “API” (Application Programming Interface) is one of the "tools" that an AI Agent uses to perform actions and complete tasks. It’s a structured way for one piece of software to talk to another. Every time Via’s systems sync real-time vehicle data with your agency dashboards, APIs are quietly at work behind the scenes. It defines how programs can send requests, exchange data, and trigger specific actions without needing to know the other program’s internal code. 💡Analogy: Think of an API as the messenger that lets systems “talk.” In our previous post about an AI Agent booking a train ticket the Agent would use APIs extensively by using: 📆 A calendar API to let the AI Agent check your availability. 🎟️ A booking API enables it to purchase a train ticket. 🚗 A traffic API makes it possible to check for delays. The API doesn’t do the work itself, it’s the standardized connection that allows two systems to communicate safely. That wraps our glossary! APTA released their #TransitWrapped2025 - and turns out Via is riding with 3/5 of the transit agencies identified for top ridership increases in the under three million annual rides category! Congratulations to these agencies for their stellar work connecting residents with jobs, loved ones, and communities 🚙
