This Monday, the UN Secretary General called for near-zero methane emissions from oil and gas. That same afternoon, I sat in a lecture hall at Imperial College listening to eight researchers explain the state of global methane monitoring: where the data exists, where it doesn’t, and what it would take to actually know if any of those pledges are working. I wrote about what I learned for Ribbit Network, the citizen scientist greenhouse gas monitoring nonprofit I co-founded. Most climate science reports are written for scientists and politicians. The people who want to understand and act on it rarely get access to the frontline research in a form they can use. That’s what I want to change, and this is my first piece toward that. The Ribbit team is in London for London Climate Action Week, and last night we attended the People’s Emergency Briefing hosted by Subak and Sustainable Ventures. It was a strong room. Opening remarks from Professor Hugh M. of UCL, followed by a panel with Clover Hogan, Asad Rehman of Friends of the Earth, Chris Venables of Green Alliance, and Emily Barrett of Sustainable Ventures. The thread running through the evening: climate change is an equity and justice issue. The communities bearing the greatest consequences are rarely the ones responsible for creating them. Any response that doesn’t start from that truth is working with incomplete information. And while it may be too late to undo what has already happened, it is never too late to act. That framing matters. The starting line is always now. This is why citizen science infrastructure matters. When people in any corner of the world can measure, document, and contribute data to a global picture, they’re not just observers of the crisis. They’re part of the response. Ribbit exists to make that kind of participation real and rigorous. We’re here for the full week and genuinely excited to be in closer proximity to organizations like Subak who have been building this global capability for years. Our Data API is now live! It has taken lots of work from many volunteers, but we finally have a released and running version of our API to access our low cost, open-source CO2, temp. and humidity sensors. Check it out! I got an email from our advisor Kristen Okorn, PhD at NASA Ames asking if Ribbit Network would like to contribute our CO2 sensor data to a new NASA database and I said yes immediately. So much of the work in remote sensing is presenting the data to people in a useful and accessible format. NASA Earthdata published a feature article on the Low-Cost Air Quality Sensor Harmonization Database, and Ribbit Network is mentioned as one of the contributing networks. Woo go Frog sensors.
