🟢 Something worth noting in the current carrier environment: FedEx's domestic fuel surcharge table hasn't changed since December 1, 2025.   That's actually how it's supposed to work. The table floats up and down each week based on real fuel index data, no adjustments, no restructuring. Just the mechanism doing its job. It's abnormally normal.   Meanwhile, UPS has updated its fuel surcharge calculations twice since the Iran conflict began, each time pushing rates higher beyond what fuel prices alone would justify.   In a moment when geopolitical events are being used as cover to improve carrier margins, FedEx staying put is the most interesting move in the room. Whether that's discipline, strategy, or a quiet play to win volume, only FedEx knows. 🟢 The way we negotiate fuel surcharges is broken. Here's what keeps happening: You go into a negotiation. You fight hard for a fuel surcharge discount. You win. You feel good about it. Then the carrier moves the table. Again. And suddenly that fuel discount that you negotiated is worth less than it was the day you signed. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. At some point, fuel surcharges stopped being surcharges. They became a pricing lever that carriers can adjust whenever it suits them. So the real issue isn't the rate. It's the fact that the baseline keeps shifting. Which raises a different question: Why are we negotiating off their table in the first place? The fix isn't new. Ask for a custom fuel table in the contract. Lock the structure into the agreement. Build the discounts into each tier. Remove the moving baseline. What you agree to is what you pay. Carriers don't love them. Most disappeared from contracts over time. Winning one back today isn't easy. But if fuel is a real cost driver for your business, it's worth putting on the table - and fighting for it. Because the conversation changes: 🔴 From: "How much of a discount can I get?" 🟢 To: "Let's talk about the table itself." That's a different negotiation.
