Honored to have joined nearly 100 Latino nonprofit leaders, philanthropy partners, and community advocates at Hispanic Federation’s #HFEncuentroMidwest. I’m humbled to have been part of the workforce development panel, where I had the opportunity to share PODER & Oprima-1 LLC’s approach to building equitable career pathways that connect Latino talent to family-sustaining careers and economic mobility. From workforce readiness and financial capability training to employer partnerships and industry-aligned career pathways, our strategy is rooted in creating opportunities that lead to long-term economic mobility and community prosperity. These conversations are more important than ever as we work together to address workforce challenges, expand access to opportunity, and strengthen the Latino nonprofit ecosystem across the Midwest. A special thank you to Peter Michelen, Roberto Valdez Jr, and the entire Hispanic Federation team for their partnership, leadership, and commitment to uplifting Latino-serving organizations. Your support of PODER and countless community-based organizations continues to create meaningful impact. We are grateful for your role as champions and ambassadors for our communities.

Throughout the day, participants explored advocacy strategies, community-centered fundraising, workforce challenges impacting Midwest Latino communities, voter education and mobilization ahead of the 2026 midterms elections, and AI opportunities and challenges. The conversations, partnership, and ideas shared here will extend far beyond this room, helping build stronger organizations and a more resilient future for Latino communities across the Midwest. Thank you to our partners and every leader, advocate, and organization for joining us. Thank you for everything you do for NUESTRA COMUNIDAD!

Today in Detroit, Mike Bloomberg announced the creation of the first-of-its-kind national initiative designed to provide high school students with direct pathways to jobs in the skilled trades. The $90 million Bloomberg Philanthropies investment will create opportunities for a new generation of workers to prepare for high-wage, family-sustaining careers in the skilled trades, and address acute labor shortages in important infrastructure-related fields like welding, electrical work, plumbing, and more in nine U.S. regions. By partnering with great American companies like Ford Motor Company, as well as teachers, local leaders, and others, the initiative will help thousands of students build skills and enter apprenticeships that lead to high-wage, in-demand jobs.

A proposed rule change from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) would have a devastating impact on nonprofits across the country. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that "the proposal would place a political appointee as a gatekeeper at each federal agency to make certain taxpayer funds don’t veer from White House priorities. In addition, the pending regulations would make it easier for agencies to terminate grants if they are no longer deemed 'in the national interest.'" Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, spoke with The Chronicle of Philanthropy about how this proposed rule would harm our partners and the communities that we serve. We raised these concerns in our meetings with elected officials this past week, and we will continue to work with Congressional leaders to make sure that Congressionally approved programs can continue to serve the public good without being politicized. This week, we visited over 100 Congressional offices for #HFEncuentroNacional to make clear that people oppose any increase in funding for DHS without including accountability or oversight. The previous funding through H.R. 1 created the federal crackdown that has already threatened people's safety, instilled fear in our neighborhoods, and had a chilling effect on local businesses. The reconciliation deal passed the Senate, and next week it moves to the House. Join us in reminding our representatives that the public opposes this deal and telling them to prioritize the issues that matter to you.
