About us

PeerForward's mission is to unleash the power of positive peer influence to transform the lives of youth living in low-income communities by connecting them to college and careers. Formerly known as College Summit, PeerForward taps a readily available resource found in every high school - influential students - to improve postsecondary success outcomes. We train and support teams of students on the planning and admissions process for higher education. Those teams of students return to their high schools and run campaigns to guide and assist their peers on the path to college. Our partner high schools show 26% higher rates of financial aid applications when compared to similar schools, and see their college enrollment increase by an average of 20%.

  • There's a game called life, and we have to win it. To close out National Volunteer Week, we want to highlight volunteer College Coach Rahking Williams. Rahking is an Alumni of the program himself who now volunteers to make sure the next generations on Peer Leaders are able to have the same transformative experience he had. Thank you, Rahking, and all our volunteers for helping make our work possible. We are still looking for volunteers for the 2026 Workshop season! Spend the summer with us and pour into our students. In just 4 days, you can make a difference in the lives of young leaders. Don't miss out on the opportunity! Can't find the time to travel? No problem! This year, the College Coach position is a remote role, making it a perfect option for those who want to give back despite travel limitations. • “To be able to help guide [Peer Leaders] in telling an authentic story about how their life has been and how they overcame their struggles is a very powerful thing.” Following his retirement in May of 2024, Neil Wertheimer immediately began to look for volunteer opportunities he could take advantage of with his newly freed schedule. Having spent 40 years in the publishing world accumulating vast experience in writing, his first instinct was to look for an opportunity where he could incorporate his expertise. That is how he found PeerForward. He has now spent 2 summers with us as a Writing Coach, using his knowledge to help students tell their story. We caught up with him to learn more about his volunteer experience with our organization and what makes it so rewarding. Whether you volunteer for a day or for life, you can make a direct impact on the lives of young students with PeerForward! In honor of National Volunteer Week, and PeerForward’s 30th anniversary, we want to take the time to show appreciation for all the volunteers who have helped us along the way. Pictured are a handful of MANY who have contributed to PeerForward’s success over the last three decades. At our 4-day Summer Workshops, high school students from across the country embark on their journey as Peer Leaders. We couldn’t do it without our dedicated volunteers who guide Peer Leaders on their journey to becoming college-ready community organizers. Thank you, volunteers, for everything you do! Do you want to join us this summer as we train the next generation of young leaders? You're in luck! We are still accepting volunteer applications for the 2026 Workshop season. Both remote and in-person opportunities are available. Check out open positions and learn more: https://lnkd.in/ecDKaNPG #nationalvolunteerweek #peerforward #volunteering #volunteerwithus

  • These photos tell a story. A story of purpose. A story of passion. A story of connection. The story of PeerForward! This year PeerForward turns 30, marking a major milestone for our organization. To honor how far we’ve come, we’re taking a look back at our staff throughout the years. • Sometimes leadership begins quietly: in a hallway, during a hard season, when you see a flyer and decide to take a chance. Gisselle Oval is one of the first Peer Leaders from the PeerForward in the College sector. She attended Broward College in Florida where she happened across the PeerForward program via a poster on campus. Recently, she sat down with us to share more about how the PeerForward program equipped her with the necessary tools to succeed while guiding her peers down the same path. Read her responses and learn more about Giselle's PeerForward story in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/eNbPPmC9 #peerforwardincollege #pfic #peerforward #peerforwardalumni

  • "The transformational impact of PeerForward lies in the fact that it is literally a holistic village of support for each young person that comes in... That’s one of the reasons I came back, honestly." SaShay Butler, M.Ed first encountered PeerForward, then called College Summit, in 2010. At the time, they were a rising senior at Cross High School in South Carolina. In 2025, SaShay returned to PeerForward, this time as a volunteer. They wanted to make a difference in the lives of Peer Leaders the same way the volunteers from their Workshop made a difference in theirs. We caught up with SaShay to learn more about what they hoped to achieve in volunteering as well as what makes being a part of PeerForward such a transformative experience. Read more about their journey in our latest blogpost: https://lnkd.in/ehC7yKKc Are you ready to have a transformative summer of your own? • For 30 years now, PeerForward has been a force of positive peer influence. We're not done yet; we're just getting started! For three decades, our work has been powered by something extraordinary—young people leading young people. From communities across the United States and Bermuda, including our newest chapters in Denver, Detroit, and Hawaii, students have stepped forward as Peer Leaders, creating cultures of possibility and opening doors to higher education and careers. At the heart of this anniversary is a simple truth: peer leadership changes outcomes—and access changes everything. Are you proud member of our vast PeerForward network? We’d love to highlight your PeerForward story! Share your career, education, or volunteer journey with us. I think their work is more urgent today than it was 30 years ago. Please consider supporting PeerForward in some way in 2026.

College Summit, now known as PeerForward, began 30 years ago with just four students! When J.B. Schramm, Derek Canty, and Dr. Keith Frome hosted the first College Summit Workshop in 1996, they had no idea that helping four students navigate the college application process would eventually transform the lives of 700,000+ students. Over the last three decades, we have evolved our model and expanded to new markets, but our focus has remained consistent – ensuring students in underserved communities have a shot at higher education and economic agency through meaningful careers. Our work is far from over. In fact, we are just getting started. Here's to many more years of impact! You can support our mission and help us celebrate 30 years by making a donation: https://lnkd.in/eGm638iB #peerforward #30years #impact
