“I started in this same building back in October 1985. It was Georgia Pacific at the time. I was hired permanently in March of ’86, working on the floor as a general laborer.” That’s where Richard Williamson's journey with PCA began. He steadily moved through the corrugator, the trimming desk and into planning. He supervised the corrugator for 12–15 years, served as Scheduling Manager, and became the person who could back up nearly every major function: shipping, planning, fabrication and supervision. As food safety gained focus, Richard stepped in to help the Quality Manager. When that leader retired, he moved into a full-time Quality role, where he continues to make an impact today. He values the broader perspective it offers. “You get more interaction with coworkers and develop a better understanding of how someone’s actions affect the entire plant. You also get to meet customers. Usually, when Quality sees a customer, the customer’s already upset,” he jokes. “It’s great when we get to interact on good terms.” Throughout his career, several mentors left their mark: Keith Lansdale and Charlie Warren from his corrugator days; Gordon Guy in planning; and Tom Ports, who played multiple leadership roles during Richard’s time at the plant. Their steady guidance helped shape his development across four decades. When asked about the most valuable lessons he’s learned, Richard points first to patience. “In quality, you investigate everything. What you think happened isn’t always what really happened. You can’t rush to judgment; you have to look at all sides.” He also credits PCA’s STOP safety program for sharpening another instinct: constant awareness. “You learn to observe people from head to toe. It sticks with you — even outside of work. To anyone just starting out, Richard offers simple but honest advice: "Put in the work, ask questions, and learn everything you can.” Outside of work, Richard’s life has largely revolved around family. His oldest granddaughter has played softball since she was six. He’s spent countless weekends traveling for tournaments, practices and games. She recently signed her college commitment, and while the travel ball years are winding down, he already looks forward to catching games when she plays locally. “I don’t really have hobbies,” he laughs. “I haven’t had time. But being with the grandkids keeps me busy.” Please join us in celebrating Richard and his remarkable 40-year career!
