Updates

  • Oregon Sea Grant Extension works alongside partners across the state to provide research-based support that meets the needs of Oregon's coastal communities. We're excited to expand that work by growing our support for Oregon's aquaculture and mariculture industries. Take a look at the steps we're taking and what they mean for Oregon's coast! https://lnkd.in/gdugCjhM

As #CleanBeachesWeek comes to a close, we are excited to highlight one of our 2026 #OASIS interns, Peeta Arenas-Galicia, at the City of Yachats.  Peeta, a current Ecological Engineering student at Oregon State University, shares: “Working my first job at a coffee shop in Newport, I couldn't shake an uneasy feeling every single shift. Disposable cups, lids, and sleeves are handed out one after another, and out of every 30 customers, maybe one would bring a reusable cup. I started doing the math in my head and the numbers didn't sit right with me. Where was all of that going? A lot of it, I learned, was ending up in the oceans. This summer I'm interning with the City of Yachats through the Oregon Sea Grant OASIS Program, working on a Waste Prevention and Materials Reduction Initiative. My project centers on reducing single-use plastics and marine debris at the source before plastic cups, utensils, and packaging ever have a chance to reach Oregon's coastline. I've been conducting waste audits at local events, tracking what's being consumed and what's being thrown away, and building a data-driven foundation for a recommendations guide that will help both city staff and facility renters make the swap from disposable to reusable as easy as possible. Every audit I complete, every plastic cup I count, and every recommendation I draft is a step toward the engineer I want to be. I want to build systems that protect natural resources and serve the communities that depend on them. I am so happy to have a full circle moment from being a high schooler who worked at a coffee shop worrying about marine debris to taking action and finding solutions to these problems.” The OASIS program is funded by a Pollution Prevention grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and administered through Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The City of Yachats project is additionally funded by a NOAA Marine Debris Removal grant. #OASISintern #OregonSeaGrant #pollutionprevention #CityofYachats

Over the past 10 weeks, I have had the opportunity to work with BRING, supporting marketing and communications efforts focused on sustainable business practices through their Rethink Business Program. Rethink seeks to connect local businesses with the guidance and support they need to turn environmental commitments into meaningful action. In this role, I collaborated closely with Angelina Bautista to refresh the Rethink social media page, helping raise awareness of the program and engage businesses across Lane County in strengthening their sustainability practices. Together, we crafted Green Business Certification spotlights, supported outreach on site visits, and helped roll out recycling education content related to Oregon’s recent Recycling Modernization Act. (Check out a few of our visuals below, or head over to the Rethink Business Instagram page for more!) Ultimately, this role taught me exactly how to use thoughtful communication to engage audiences who may or may not have "sustainability" on their radar yet. I’m excited to share that I will be continuing with BRING this summer as an Oregon Applied Sustainability Internships Program (OASIS) Program intern on a project funded by Oregon Sea Grant and the EPA! In this next role, I’ll be deepening my understanding of BRING’s Rethink certification, working with breweries to support the implementation of the BetterBev platform, and helping businesses identify opportunities to strengthen pollution-prevention practices. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue learning from BRING and to further the work that supports resilient green businesses in Oregon!

How does the Oregon Applied Sustainability Internships (OASIS) program shape companies and the feasibility of sustainable solutions long-term? #OASIS intern Rohan Keenan interned for the Oregon Potato Company (OPC) to evaluate fuel, power, and water usage at four facilities across Oregon. Rohan conducted site visits, collected and analyzed data, coordinated with internal staff, created process maps, and developed process diagrams that identified areas of high consumption and potential inefficiencies. Rohan connected flows to specific facility equipment and production steps to map paths to OPC’s sustainability and efficiency goals. In addition to reducing operating costs and improving worker safety, the recommendations Rohan made to align with OPC’s commitment to company sustainability could have the following annual impacts when implemented: 💵 $162,570 savings 💧5,760,000 gallons of water saved ☁️2,597 metric tons reduced CO2 emissions Read more about 2025 Success Stories on our website linked in the comments! The OASIS program is funded by a Pollution Prevention grant from the Environmental Protection Agency Region 10 and administered through Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). #OASIS #SeaGrant #Sustainability

I recently published my first solo feature for KLCC about seafloor monitoring taking place at the PacWave site off the Oregon coast, and the opportunities for local students to shadow marine scientists for a day 😎 🌊 Thank you so much to Oregon State University and Oregon Sea Grant for inviting me out for a day on the R/V Pacific Storm. It felt good to put my Grundéns and Xtratufs on and pretend I was a fisheries scientist again — though this time I didn't need to get nearly as dirty! https://lnkd.in/giE2FAbi #KLCC #NPR #publicradio #publicradionerd #scicomm #sciencecommunication

  • What do gray whales, kelp forests, and the Oregon coast have in common? OPB joined Oregon State University field researchers from the GEMM Lab and Marine Mammal Institute in Port Orford to document Dr. Leigh Torres' long-running gray whale research project. Torres, Oregon Sea Grant's Marine Mammal Extension Specialist, and her team are studying the gray whales that spend their summers along the Oregon coast and exploring their connection to kelp ecosystems.
