    4 weeks ago, I was in Toronto with Kiril Climson, our co-founder at Shopify HQ. 2 weeks ago, I was in Vegas for Shoptalk, meeting e-commerce operators face to face with our other co-founder Hamish McKay. Today I'm in a coworking space in Palermo, Buenos Aires. Jacques du Plessis is across the table, deep in merchant support, Hamish is on a call, and I'm onboarding our newest hire to better support our US merchants. I'm 21 and from New Zealand. I run growth at Order Editing. None of this was the plan. I didn't have connections in e-commerce. I've been working remotely from Mexico, Canada, and now Argentina because the time zones work, the people are incredible, the food is unreal, and the quality of life lets you do your best work. Some weeks look like helping draft employment agreements at midnight because we're setting up entities in three countries. Some weeks it's coaching a teammate on how to write a better merchant email. Some weeks it's nerding out over a checkout flow with someone who runs a brand I used to buy from as a teenager. Most days don't look like Shoptalk or Shopify HQ. Most days are early morning demos, long Slack threads, chasing follow-ups, and solving problems for merchants that nobody else will. But every now and then, you get on a call with someone who built something incredible, and they trust you to help make it better. That part never gets old.   • Let's go! An 11.40% AOV uplift from Order Editing

    When we launch a limited edition flavour, customers go straight from product page > checkout on autopilot. They're focused on newness. We want it to also be an opportunity for them to top up on our hero Ginger. In previous releases we’ve had a healthy % ordering both, but knew there was more to go after. Bundling them together on the product page or at cart didn't work. But Order Editing (thanks Erin) functionality did. Two moments: 1. At checkout - a nudge to tip over the free shipping threshold. Purchase intent is high already. 2. Post-purchase - a simple 'just add another bottle' before the order ships. Nothing to lose, the conversion has already happened. The result: a meaningful uplift in AOV across our current limited edition launch (Rhubarb if you’re interested!) without killing conversion and a feature that works for our evergreen products too.

    I made my company's fastest hire today. From job ad to signed offer in 30 days. Does that sound slow to you? The challenges of hiring are much larger at a startup. Every day I'm fighting three battles: #1 Getting world-class talent to notice a company no one's heard of yet. #2 Convincing them we're their best career move (when we're still proving ourselves). #3 Getting them to bet this chapter of their career on us and sign that final offer letter and contract. After growing Order Editing to seven figures, I stopped trying to hire fast. We 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 hire faster. But we wouldn't have the team we have. It took 5 months to find Andrej Mazhenkovski. But he's an exited founder who interviewed at Y Combinator. He's since built two products that make up close to $1M of our ARR. It took 6 months and paying a recruiter to find Alan Coppin. But he came from being Head of Engineering at Australia's Platinum Shopify agency. I won't list out the entire team. You'd poach them all if you knew. We've averaged 90 days from job ad to signed offer across our 13 hires. 30 days is a record for us because our motto is this: "If the entire team isn't excited to work with them, it's a no." Or: "If they're not early and exponential, it's a no." Speed is nice. But I'd rather wait for someone worth betting on. #hiring #founders

    This feels surreal... holy shit!!! 👀 👏 Cut a Shopify brands address validator bill by 80% by consolidating it into Order Editing. They went from paying $0.06 an order to $0.01. I think it's a no-brainer. To pay $1. 1 Dollar! Per 100 customer orders to automatically correct any customers that made a mistake, like missing an apartment number or making a typo. How much does a returned to sender cost? How much are your carrier correction fees? How much does 5 minutes of an agents time cost? We built address validation as a service because we know it's greater than $1 per 100 orders. Look into it 👋 Order Editing. #shopify

  • Who's coming to Shoptalk Vegas?! 👀

    Next week I'm flying to Shoptalk Vegas! One of the hardest rooms for a bootstrapped startup to win. Mike Tyson and his lion in a penthouse. Caviar bumps. IV drips! Last year we spent $15,000 on the event. We were in the bottom 10% for investment made. We still walked away with some of our best customers. I learned that in a room full of whales, being scrappy is our edge. Instead of getting lost in the sauce, I put all my energy into being the founder people remember talking to. The data is screaming: Great people want to work with great people. Why bury that under glitz and glamour? Aside from the fact that we can't afford it 😉 This year, I'm doing it all again with Lachie Tod and Claudia Ditri. Only this time? 3x the customers. Double the headcount.     I was in a 1-1 with my co-founder, I told him I had to disappear to Patagonia for a couple weeks. He asked why... I explained that I needed to be reminded why I decided to build a business. I told him that I see our business as a vehicle for the life I want to live. Financial independence, freedom to be creative, working with people I respect, and building something that outlasts me. "Lately, I feel like I don't have half of these things" is how I ended the call, not looking at him. A few days into my break I made contact for the first time and sent him this photo. "I love a big smile on you" and he left it at that. I'm in office today, my first weekly team meeting back is in 30 minutes. The smile has stayed.

    Six weeks ago I was settling into Toronto life and quietly figuring out what the next chapter looked like.   Now I'm packing a bag for Vegas.   Next week is Shoptalk. March 24-26. 10,000+ people. One of the biggest events in e-commerce. And my first one.   I've spent the last sixteen months at Order Editing building things I'm proud of. Onboarding merchants. Running success.
